Best Bring Your Own Wine Montreal Restaurants to Make Your Mouth Water

The most expensive part of going to a restaurant can often be high priced beverages. Most restaurants have a 200-250% mark up on alcohol! However, Montreal restaurants are one step ahead of the thrifty consumer. Some restaurants in Montreal are acquiring a special license that allows customers to BYOB (Bring your own Beer or Wine.) Therefore, we’ve compiled a list of the best bring your own wine Montreal restaurants. As long as you are purchasing food off of the menu, you’re welcome to consume previously purchased wine or beer inside the restaurant. Going to BYOB’s is a great way to cut down food costs without compromising the quality of your dining experience! Here are some BYOB’s that we’ve grown fond of in Montreal!

1. Luna

One of few places serving Korean offerings in Le Plateau Mont-Royal, Luna strives towards authenticity with a modern twist. All of the food is homemade using traditional methods inspired by the families and ancestors of the restaurants’ owners. On the other hand, the plating and interior design will please even the most well-trained contemporary eye. This attention to detail makes the restaurant warm, inviting and, most importantly, delicious – altogether landing it a spot among the best Korean restaurants in the city, and as the best BYOW place, too. Luna is seriously so good you could just stop reading right here… but what’s the fun in that?

2. La Prunelle

This cute little Plateau area french bistro is well known for its delicate fine dining and quaint location. Situated right on the corner of Duluth and Drolet, La Prunelle is the perfect fit for a summer night out. The two main walls of the restaurant are floor to ceiling glass window panes. In the summer months the walls roll up like garage doors and the restaurant turns into a semi-terrace. It’s a good idea to call ahead for a reservation because this place is always packed. Also a great idea to come armed with cash, they don’t accept debit!

3. Gracia Afrika

This is one of the tastiest restaurants in the St-Henri area. Chef and owner of Gracia Afrika, Bibi Ntumba, grew up in the Congo and and was taught to cook traditional African dishes by her mother. Bibi now shares all the recipes she keeps close to her heart with her clients. You can expect delicious homemade fares in a warm and bright environment. Choose from fragrant, colourful traditional dishes like the mwambé (seasoned chicken in a peanut butter sauce) or an assortment of meats cooked in a banana leaf. Ideal for a relaxed evening (Bibi personally cooks most of the dishes so wait times are occasionally longer than usual), bring a bottle, sit back, and unwind!

And now for something completely different…  another small Parisian bistro! The Plateau area’s Le P’tit Plateau is traditional french dining done right. The atmosphere is humble almost as if to announce “We let our food define us not our decor.” P’tit is open Tuesday to Friday and offers two seatings for dinner (6:30 and 8:30 pm). Reservations are essential, this tiny place is popular and fills up quickly. Yes, yes it’s a bit pricey… However, its easier to rationalize eating here by bringing that cheaper bottle of red!

If you’re looking for the best pho in town, then look no further than the gay village’s Pho Viet. This family restaurant was opened around 10 years ago by the charming owners, Mai and Lan. The dishes are traditional vietnamese made with grilled chicken, shrimp, and beef, but there are also some vegetarian options. The food is simple but the sauces are bursting with flavour. Try the Vietnamese fondue for two that comes with chicken, tomato shrimp, and vegetables in a spiced broth. The prices are very decent, and with your own wine, you’re in for a tasty and inexpensive night!

The space is large and open, accented with stained oak finishes. Somehow it manages to feel homie and modern simultaneously. One of the most unique features of Le Quartier is the open air kitchen. Restaurant goers are right in the action as they catch glimpses of the meals being prepared. Watching the best ingredients from Quebec as they sizzle, sauce and toss!

Mon Lapin is a much anticipated new wine bar in Little Italy. It seats only 35 customers at a time and serves 15 constantly rotating dishes made of local farm fresh ingredients that strive to please the mouth instead of the eyes. Most importantly, it features a tasteful selection of natural wines, which take centre stage in the middle of the room. Mon Lapin doesn’t take reservations, so stop by soon to see what the buzz is about!

Both upstairs and down you’ll find innovation that packs a punch: hearty and memorable dishes above, simple and well-made bites below. Its name, even, is a nod to Nota Bene, a charming stationary store next door. Nominated by EnRoute for its list of best Canadian restaurants in 2017, Moleskine is worth paying a visit – or two.

Escondite is the city’s favourite funky Mexican restaurant. Not only is the food fun, if you’re looking for a little help in the conversation-starter department, Escondite is  definitely your friend. Their décor consists of as many twists as their dishes: images of Mexican wrestlers and neon lights line the walls, and everything from pork and pineapple tacos to smoked meat poutine assemble on plates. Escondite translates to “hideout,” which makes sense because hiding out here is an experience you won’t want to miss. If you’re still unconvinced, that’s okay: they also offer signature drinks that you can enjoy on their terrace in the summer, making it one of the best places to eat in Montreal.

12. Foiegwa

In the heart of St-Henri, we begin with a bit of humour at this French-with-hints-of-American restaurant, Foiegwa. The name was inspired by how anglophones pronounce foie gras–without the ‘Rrr’–which is one of the many French words Americans and Canadians butcher. Speaking of butcher, Foiegwa serves-up a delectable selection of meat: dishes like their boeuf bourguignon, their poached black cod, and their locally-sourced, organic fried chicken. Foiegwa is a fine-dining experience without the pretentiousness: it’s located in a venue that formerly housed the Quebec fast-food joint, La Belle Province. Its decor is simple: white tiles line the walls and ceiling and dozens of sketches of famous Quebec figures are mounted on the walls. You’ll find American-style cocktails to pair with your meal here at Foie Gras–oops–Foiegwa.

Plus, the well-designed decor definitel lives up to the name. Their tasting menu comes with 9 courses and is crafted from local ingredients. For drink pairings they offer wine, naturally, as well as a non-alcoholic option that makes this the perfect place to celebrate a special occassion as a whole family, or simply have a superbly romantic meal.

You can see patrons enjoying the restaurant’s daily specials at the window bar. Though they don’t have ramen on the menu, you can savour their udon noodle and soba soups which often grace the alternating menu.

Mile Ex Montreal: 15 Reasons Why You Should Go…Now!

There’s something bittersweet about witnessing the development of an emerging neighbourhood. Too often, we’re only privy to our city’s secret spots once they’re out of the bag and crowded, or we want to hold on to them before they are. Mile Ex is currently in the midst of its transformation, and still has that twinge of excitement and mystery to it. Officially called the “Alexandra-Marconi” district, Mile Ex spans from Parc Avenue to Clark Street, between Jean-Talon and the train tracks. It’s a cozy, primarily residential neighbourhood that’s been built up from an austere industrial area by its dedicated residents, yet a new wave of development is beginning to obscure its humble roots.

Take a look at the list below to find out why you should go be part of the buzz, or check out some more Exciting Things to Do all over town.

1. Bar Alexandraplatz

Nestled between a semi-vacant parking lot and one of Mile Ex’s emblematic industrial buildings, Bar Alexandraplatz is like a backyard party you can show up to without invitation, every single (summer) day. With its garage door entrance, cash only policy, lack of a phone number, and the fact that it opens only for what their website calls the “beautiful season,” the homegrown vibe at Alexandraplatz is as uncomplicated as getting 5 à 7 drinks and hanging out with your buddies should be. Plus, a few times a month, food trucks gather around the Berlin-style beer garden, turning the energy from a backyard, to a full-scale block party!

2. Manitoba

A restaurant that describes itself as serving food that is like “wood, rock, and wind,” Manitoba is a sort of oasis: a culinary return to nature that sits in stark contrast to the concrete dwellings that surround it. Yet, the concept of Manitoba is an ode to simplicity, a return to basics that fits right in with the changing culture of the neighbourhood. Serving all fresh, local ingredients and compelling dishes you won’t find anywhere else, this spot is becoming an increasingly popular attraction of Mile Ex, slowly chipping away at its “industrial only” status.

3. Parc des Gorilles

Speaking of returning to nature, Parc des Gorilles is a DIY green space that’s soon to bring new life to the neighbourhood. The project has been in the works for several years thanks to a strong community incentive to convert a historic railway route into a green, neighbourhood-friendly space. After a series of disputes between residents, the Borough, and the land’s previous owners, a plan for the park finally has been approved this spring. With the tech industry starting to move into the area, its more important now than ever for residents of the formerly industrial neighbourhood to have a place to call their own. Keep an eye out for movement on the lot as the summer progresses, and maybe lend a hand, too, as the park will be both restored and managed by and for community members.

4. 180g

Following an unexpected theme you may soon begin to pick up on in these recommendations: 180g is a unique combination of two distinct operations, tucked away in an industrial loading bay. Both a cafe and record store, the vibe at 180g is cozy and cool. Good music is always spinning on their record player making you feel warm and welcome as you lunch on delicious yet affordable eats or just sip your coffee. Make sure to also spend some time digging through their expertly curated record selection, you’re sure to find some rare gems, underground electronic beats, or vintage hip-hop records, depending on what you’re seeking.

5. Never Apart

As can be expected from an up-and-coming Montreal neighbourhood, Mile Ex has become a hub for activism and the arts. One of the drivers of this movement is Never Apart, a non-profit organization that stands for “Change Through Spirit & Culture.” Driven by creativity and a desire to educate the public on equality, the environment and conscious living, they forge all forms of artistic collaboration. The centre is an inclusive space that brings together community members through social gatherings, music, art exhibitions, panel discussions, workshops, special events, and more. These moments of unity and are the perfect opportunity to enact positive change for the future, and get inspired by people’s passion and originality along the way.

6. Bar Le Ritz PDB

PDB stands for “Punks Don’t Bend” but if Bar Le Ritz is any example, they sure do dance. There’s an exciting event going on at the queer-friendly and wheelchair accessible venue on almost any given night. Between live musical acts, DJs, and even drag performers, the lineup is varied and exciting. You can hear experimental Montreal-grown sounds one night and then return and dance to global pop anthems the next. If you’re looking to see how Mile Ex’s community-driven ethos translates to the nightlife, this is truly the place to do it.

7. Café Guerrero

Located inside the Esplanade Loft Project building, a structure’s that’s iconic to the neighbourhood, is Cafe Guerrero. The mission of this humble spot is simple: delicious, affordable, healthy food for everyone. The owner and chef refers to Guerrero as “the shop,” implying that each sandwich you’ll eat here is a labour of love. In fact, the menu itself changes daily, a sure sign of a passionate chef.

8. Dépanneur Le Pick-Up

Perhaps the most famous “dépanneur” in the city, Le Pick-Up mirrors the intimacy of simply stepping in to your neighbour’s private hangout, but you’ll find yourself in a half restaurant, half convenience store instead. The combination may sound strange, but thats’s exactly what gives Le Pick-up its character. The “couple of tables strewn around a store” vibe means you’ll likely end up at the diner-style bar, wedged between a zine stand, some mismatched dishes, and other hungry customers… but what keeps people coming back is, of course, the delicious food. Their halloumi sandwich is internet famous, their pulled pork feeds as many artists as mechanics, and with the choice of cheddar or Kraft for your cheeseburger, these folks respect the different moods of the hungry heart.

9. Harricana

Beer lovers rejoice: you can rely on wildly popular Harricana to fill all of the area’s mandatory craft beer needs. The microbrewery has become a cornerstone of the neighbourhood since it opened in 2015, bringing together people of all ages day in and day out with its affordable prices and warm, communal energy. Their unique selection of beers, rotating guest tap, and reliably enjoyable food menu also mean that its been a key player in bringing people from other parts of the city to the area. Plus, the kitchen’s open until 2 am, too, so let the good times keep on rolling!

10. Emporium

Like any good neighbourhood, the Barber Shop Revival is alive and well in Mile Ex. With at least five different types of wood as part of its decor, and shelves showcasing the finest products in pretty vintage packages, Emporium exudes an old-timey, cozy basement vibe. It’s one of the chief leaders in the neighbourhood’s laid back aesthetic. Their “Lineup – Espresso” combo is a walk-in only experience that will leave you believing you truly are in your friend’s kitschy basement shop: a quick neck shave and espresso are just enough for your barber to welcome you and send you off with an uplifting caffeine buzz.

11. Dinette Triple Crown

Located at Clark and St-Zotique, this popular joint is right on the edge of the Mile Ex border and its visibility to the “outside world” acts as an invitation to this budding neighbourhood. If the cozy, homegrown, intimate theme of Mile Ex venues wasn’t obvious yet, Dinette Triple Crown surely makes it so. The Southern food restaurant specializes in fried chicken, mac & cheese, and other comforting eats. The real treat, though, are their picnic baskets. They’ll pack your meal in one to eat across the street in Little Italy Park. You can even take some of their products home in a mason jar, pushing the boundaries of what a restaurant can be even further.

12. Eastern Bloc

Another industrial space dedicated to showcasing creativity, Eastern Bloc promotes digital art. Through exhibits, vernissages, performances, and meetings they explore the boundaries and intersections of art, science and technology. Plus, with internationally renowned artists and budding local talent both on the roster, the programming is rich and eclectic through this exchange. Come check out the gallery as they continue to explore modes of production, facilitate audience participation and support emerging talent – you’ll find both moments for quiet reflection or sensorially charged dance parties, depending on the day.

13. Notre Dame des Quilles

You’ll find this other local nightlife favourite at Beaubien and St-Dominique just steps outside the heart of Mile Ex. The cleverly named bar revives the idea of drinking and bowling, and with its Prohibition era aesthetic, dance parties, DJ events and karaoke nights, you might find yourself grooving on the lanes when the time comes. Plus, its usual hipster crowd (a staple at most Mile Ex venues), LGBTQ events, affordable drinks and laid-back decor mean the venue is an inviting space for anyone. And finally, one last tip: there’s pizza in the back!

15. Le Mile-Ex Restaurant

Le Mile-Ex is the small, cozy, fine food eatery that may just be the reason behind the neighbourhood’s monicker. The restaurant has become a popular spot for food-fanatics from not only Montreal, but from all over. (A New York Times review never hurts.) The joint is something of an ode to the modernization of street food, offering brioche hot dogs, seafood mac and cheese, and a pop up ice cream shop in the summer. Reflecting the growing neighbourhood, you can enjoy these elevated dishes while seated under hanging bare lightbulbs at communal tables, all characteristic of Mile Ex’s unique energy.

Montreal Food Trucks: 12 Trucks to Try this Summer

2013 saw the end of a horribly dark era: Montreal’s Great Food Truck Ban. The Montreal food trucks have now been welcomed back, but with some guidelines and restrictions. To run, the trucks must get certified as “gourmet”, and commit to promoting local ingredients. Not too bad, as far as rules go. What’s more, is that they’re all associated with an established restaurant or catering service, meaning that if you’re reading this outside of food truck season, don’t panic! They’re hiding, but they’re around.

Check out the list below for our selection of the 12 best Montreal food trucks you’ll find in Montreal this year.

12. Queen B Bol Burrito

Montreal food trucks

Get a taste of the world in one bowl. Queen B’s burrito bowls are inspired by a myriad of world cuisines, the best of which are mixed into their bowls. They believe in generous portions, eco-friendly commitments, and serve only the freshest ingredients. Don’t forget to try their ginger and hibiscus lemonade!

11. Le Cheese Truck

Montreal Food Trucks Le Cheese Truck
Photo: Le Cheese Truck

What’s that saying…? You’re better off doing one thing well than doing many things not so well? Anyway, we’re really happy that Le Cheese has shunned everything except for one thing, because they do it supremely well. Showcasing our local cheeses and presenting them in simple but flattering ways, this restaurant on wheels is a gift from the Grilled Cheese Gods. The menu is a shrine to the classic grilled cheese: tomato soup, tater tots, mac ‘n cheese with green peas… Local ingredient goodness from mom’s kitchen? Yes, but on wheels.

10. Damon

Montreal food trucks

Damon Food Truck serves-up Indian fares hotter than Matt Damon. If spicy is your cup of tea, try their fan-favourite butter chicken poutine. Soak it up with the fresh naan bread and wash it down with a mango lassi on a hot summer day.

9. Landry & filles

montreal food trucks landry1

Landry & filles came in with a bang, winning over food critics’ hearts in 2013. Rumour has it that their stay at the Just For Laughs Festival had comics lining up for their grub, too. Taking Quebec’s traditional grub and refreshing it for today’s foodies by way of few twists, it’s easy to see why these “filles” (French for “girls”) are easy to fall in love with. Their meatloaf sandwich is so good that sometimes, an unsuspecting meatloaf lover will try one and never be able to eat a meatloaf from anywhere else again.

8. Dim Sum Montreal

Montreal food trucks

Dim Sum stands for “touch the heart,” and this food truck does so through their delicious, melt-in-your-mouth dumplings. Watch them steam your dumplings to perfection, and choose to pair your hot dumplings with a spring or imperial roll. They also throw in Chinese cookies and a portion of rice for good measure. Let Dim Sum touch your heart with their dumplings once, and you’ll be back for more!

7. Le Tuk Tuk

montreal food trucks tuktuk

Le Tuk Tuk is fun because it seeks to recreate an authentic Thai street food experience right here on the streets of Montreal. Mango salad, papaya salad, pad thai… complex Thai flavours aren’t compromised by this eat-on-the-go concept. Eating at Tuk Tuk is an effectively refreshing oasis for your mouth, as you navigate the huffing and puffing of city cars.

6. Mobile Europea

Food trucks montreal

Forget the white tablecloths, Mobile Europea is hitting the road once again to bring classic French bistro dishes to the streets of Montreal. Quebec chef Jérôme Ferrer’s culinary creations are heading out of their upscale restaurant home to grace Montreal’s streets and festivals. Think shrimp risotto or a fancy poutine with foie gras and a mushroom gravy. Who doesn’t want to experience French gastronomic delights while enjoying a summer festival?

5. Phoenix 1

Montreal food trucks

Humanity could probably agree that naan bread is one of the best sides you could ask for. Well, we’re in luck! Phoenix 1 makes naan bread wraps and sandwiches (also known as naanwiches) that’ll satisfy your deepest cravings. It’s comfort food that draws from a myriad of cuisines, giving each naanwich a delicious, eclectic taste. It’s definitely a food truck to get wrapped up in!

4. Das Food Truck

Montreal food trucks

What happens when German ingredients combine with Quebec classic eats? You get Das Food Truck that’s reinventing poutine with German flares. They take a classic french fry base and add crispy fried chicken, sausages and sauerkraut. You can also get schnitzel, bacon and burgers if a heavy-load poutine isn’t for you. Have a taste of deutschland at your next festival escapade!

 3. Grumman 78

food trucks montreal grummanIn only three years, this lime green truck has become something of a famous vehicle. For Montrealers, the Grumman name has become synonymous with irresistible tacos. Spottable from a mile away, its fluorescent color helps taco lovers follow their hungry belly’s desires. Featuring innovative tacos such as the Bahn Mi pork, lamb curry, and a veggie feta pimento concoction,  you’ve got tons of reasons to come to Grumman’s and be part of the (well earned) food buzz.

2. Winneburger

Montreal food trucks

From Montreal’s Nouveau Palais comes a food truck with simple comfort foods. Winneburger’s cheeseburgers, hot dogs, and marinated tofu are straightforward, fresh and delicious dishes. Choose a combo that includes a milkshake–vanilla, praline or strawberry–and you’ll feel as though you’ve jumped back to the 1950s.

1. Ô Soeurs Volantes

food trucks montreal o deux

Ô Soeurs Volantes is impressive because it pleases the meat lover, the vegetarian, the sweet toother, and the token gluten-free person. Unlike most restaurants with such a diverse menu, Ô Soeurs hits the nail on the head for everyone.  Meatball options include tofu, organic, gluten-free and some are named after our city’s beloved streets, like the Jeanne-Mance. They’ve also got quite the salad menu, where you’ll find quinoa, kale, pork, trout…  all served with tortilla. Maybe for a DIY burrito? Hmm..

**BONUS** Montreal Food Truck Thursdays at Mme. Lee

food trucks montreal mme lee

Mme. Lee is far from a food truck but… food trucks aren’t far from Mme. Lee! Nestled in the Quartier des Spectacles, a trip to Mme. Lee on a Thursday night now has more perks than their sophisticated atmosphere and proximity to Montreal’s festivals. Les Jeudis Food Truck invites a different truck every Thursday, allowing you to sample the mobile gastronomy on site.

St-Viateur Bagel facts and things you probably didn’t know…

She St-Viateur Bagel is the number 1 iconic symbol of Montreal’s culinary universe. Climbing up the food echelon to reach Montreal must-have heights of the poutine variety, bagels attract everyone from the hungry dude next door to Anthony Bourdain. I personally represent the bagels-were-a-staple-of-my-teenage-diet kind of St-Viateur bagel eater. That’s why meeting Robert, one of the three owner brothers, was such a treat.  After personally thanking him for feeding me as a hungry kid, I asked him to fill me in on some of his St-Viateur bagel secrets.

Here are 9 secrets about St-Viateur bagel that’ll make you fall in carbfatuation all over again.

12. St-Viateur Bagel employees can’t agree on the “right way” to eat a bagel.

montreal st-viateur bagel
Photo: St-Viateur Bagel

If you’re a Montrealer, you can skip down a few lines. But if not, here’s a little secret the locals already know… the real way to eat a bagel. General manager Saoul tells me he’s weak in the knees for it: dipping a fresh steamy sesame seed bagel straight into a pot of cream cheese, using the bagel’s crisp, sesame-laden edges as veritable cream cheese scoops. Eliminating the middle man has never felt so good! After all, it is the food equivalent of ripping a lover’s clothes off out of impatient desire. Owner Joe tells me that he prefers the poppy seed bagels (blasphemous), and bagel master Frederic took  a very serious tone when instructing me to avoid all those “other spreads” and use only the real thing, salted butter.

11. Meyer Lewkowitz, the man behind St-Viateur Bagels, was a Holocaust survivor.

st-viateur bagel montreal
Owner and founder, Mayer/ Photo: St-Viateur Bagel

The man behind the bagel is as legendary as the bagel has become. Originally from a Jewish village near Krakow in Poland, Meyer is a Holocaust survivor. He survived camp Buchenwald, after which he stayed in Germany. It’s there that the Jewish Immigration Aid of Canada found him and brought him over to Montreal. He’s quoted as saying “At Buchenwald, all I wanted was a piece of bread.” Not only did Lewkewitz survive the war, but he created the pinnacle of his own bread dreams: the world’s best bagel. Upon arriving to Montreal Lewkowitz found a job at a bakery on St-Laurent. It’s here that he learned the ins and outs of the bagel world, and started his own shop in 1957.

10. Every bagel contains over 1000 sesame seeds…!

montreal st-viateur bagel
Photo: St-Viateur Bagel

Here’s a fun afternoon game you can play in the Mile End if you’re bored some day: try to spot all those who had a bagel for lunch. How, you ask? Check them for sesame seeds. Think that’s an outlandish proposition? Consider this: each sesame bagel is covered in approximately 1500 sesame seeds! Hansel and Gretel aint got nothing on the trail a bagel can leave behind. It’s no wonder Joe, one of three brothers, has what some would call a “sesame seed phobia”. Rumour has it that when he does his round at the bakery, he’ll eat his bagel (with melted cheddar, fyi) and if something feels off he’ll say: “The seeds! Check the sesame seeds!” When you have 1500 of anything, you’ve got to make sure it’s perfect.

9. Sesame seeds weren’t always so popular.

Source: Bartekbas

Considering that 85% of sales today are sesame bagels, it’s surprising to find out that when this bagel business all started, poppy seed was the primary bagel variety. Bagel-buyers weren’t interested in the bland looking sesame kind. But when the price of poppy seeds sky rocketed, the owner, Mayer made the switch to sesame, forever changing the Montreal bagel as we know (and love) it today.

8. The true story behind their Open 24h a day policy.

stviateur bagel Open-sign
Photo: imperfectspirituality.com

St-Viateur Bagels wasn’t always open 24 hours a day. In fact, it wasn’t even the owner’s idea to keep it open late! It was Haim, one of the bakery’s first employees. Haim was so passionate he’d stay at the bakery until the clients stopped coming, even against St-Viateur Bagel founder Mayer’s wishes. He would tell Haim: “At 6 o’clock, you go home. Don’t stay here.” But Haim, stubborn and passionate, had a different idea: to stay until the bagels stopped selling.  And hey guess what: they never did.

7. There’s actually a secret time of day to eat a bagel…

Photo: weheartit.com
Photo: weheartit.com

We’re all familiar with the me 24h McDonald’s drive-through excursion and the 3am post-bar pizza slice. But a 24h bagel shop? That’s a truly novel Mile End affair.  At night, “it’s a different crowd, it’s more locals”, owner Robert tells me. “It’s like a hangout spot in here. People eat their bagels over the fridge, in the entrance, everywhere”. When I ask him if this bothers the staff, he laughs: “Not at all. That’s what it’s all about.” I mean, a bakery turned into an after hours snacking spot? Yes please. I asked around, expecting to hear a few crazy night time stories. But nobody had anything bad to say. Robert says “It’s something about the smell of fresh bagels… it puts everyone in a good mood”. So that’s the trick folks, warm bagels.

6. They will help you out if you’re in a jam.

montreal st-viateur bagel
Photo: St-Viateur Bagel

So I went out on a limb and told Robert about my night time teenage adventures. How after a night of partying with friends I would stumble into St-Viateur Bagel, without a penny, and ask if they had any free bagels (rumour had it that these were the ones that had fallen on the floor). Employees would without hesitation, turn around, reach into this white box, and hand me my carbohydrate sustenance for the next few hours. When I was done telling my bagel-love-story, Robert just smiled at me and said: “That box is still there. We give to whoever asks”. It turns out those are day old bagels, and since nothing goes to waste at St-Viateur Bagel, what better to do than to save them for a person in need?

5. They give to charity. Constantly.

montreal st-viateur bagel
Photo: St-Viateur Bagel

When he said that he gives to whoever asks, Robert didn’t just mean individuals. St-Viateur bagel is also really big on donating to charities, and they’re especially interested in supporting the local community. Schools, festivals, and organizations such as the YMCA and Share the Warmth are regular recipients of these doughy godsends. After I was done sharing my excitement over the bakery’s generosity, Robert responded in the most genuine manner, “It’s the least we can do for our family. It’s them who put us on the map”. Yep, he’s talking about locals.

4. Duddy Kravitz is responsible for St-Viateur’s international fame.

montreal stviateur bagel duddy

Walking into St-Viateur Bagel is a lot like walking into a hall of fame. To your right, a slew of famous newspaper and magazine articles paste the walls like vines that are all too happy to keep growing upwards.  Pictures of celebrities cozy up against one another, with barely any room to spare. How exactly does that happen? Believe it or not, Duddy Kravitz can take credit for this one. The 1974 film has a bagel scene shot at St-Viateur bagel. This got people curious about bagels, and fans of the film came travelling to the soon to be hotspot.

3. You can order St-Viateur Bagels from across the border.

Source: HDwallpapers.com
Source: hdwallpapers.com

That’s right! If you head to their “online bakery”, you’ll be asked which country you’re ordering from. Goes to show how in demand these babies are.

2. The bagel pros compete between each other.

montreal st-viateur bagel
Photo: St-Viateur Bagel

Pictured above are the bagel masters themselves alongside culinary hero, Anthony Bourdain. You can almost see it on their faces that they earned their spot! There’s even a plaque on the wall you can see, from the last competition’s winner: 37 quality bagels in one minute! The rules are strict though: they can’t be mini bagels, and they have to be a real circle, not a strange C shape.

1. Becoming a bagel master is kind of like getting a Karate black belt.

Photo: Andy Gryn, stviateurbagel.com
Photo: Andy Gryn, stviateurbagel.com

We wanted to know what it takes to become a bagel master. Here’s what we found out. First, you’ll need a good, lavish dose of bagel appreciation. Then, you’ll need to dedicate the next 6 months to a year of your life to perfecting your bagel making skills. Yep, that’s how long it takes to become a bagel slayer. During this time you will master the perfect bagel size, cooking time, and wood oven technique. Not everyone was born to roll bagels though: small hands mean small bagels, big hands mean big bagels. And what we’re after? It’s that mystical St-Viateur Montreal bagel in between size.

New Tour: Quebec City Food Tours/Visites Gourmandes de Québec!

We are officially launching a new tour: Quebec City Food Tours!

By Kimberly Handfield

We are so excited to finally enable travelers to discover the unbeaten path of St-Roch; a trendy neighborhood in Quebec City. This was a big endeavor for both Frédérik Nissen and Ismael Ulvik, the Co-Founders of company. It took about 9 months to research, create and finally launch. “This was an amazing project,” they stated, “and we are grateful that we can show off some of Quebec’s local artisans, unique flavors and gastronomy”.

what lies in the road less traveled?

The tour is 3 hours long and makes a total of five stops to enjoy various food and drink creations. You begin at the famous microbrewery La Barberie, to enjoy a home-made pea soup and two different artisanal beers. Next, you visit Camellia Sinensis Tea Shop to taste two different type of seasonal teas paired with some home-grown cheese. After, you make your way to the popular restaurant Le Cercle to enjoy a deliciously healthy beet, goat cheese, and balsamic vinegar salad. Then, you go to Le Cloché Penché to taste an artfully presented dish of vaiselle cheese, linguee and duck, along with a small glass of imported wine. Lastly, you make your way over to Le Pied Bleu to taste various chacuteries along with some local apple cider. All the while during the tour you also get a lesson about the history and cultural identity of Quebec City, and what lies in the road less traveled.

Tostada

Don’t be surprised if you feel the need to name drop after visiting the Plateau’s new restobar “Majestique” The urge to inform (a.k.a brag) to your friends is a valid reaction.  Simply because this spot is the classic “plateau” experience . The brand new joint is located right on the Main at 4105 St.Laurent. The building used to house a hot dog factory called “Hot Dog Lesters.” Today the original “Delli-Cite” sign still hangs outside. Perhaps it’s a kitschy reminder of simple times; Montreal’s hot dog era.

DELISIGN

Today the space has been taken over by a culinary dream team. Starting with Chef Charles Antoine Crete; who is best known for his work at Toqué! and Brasserie T! Charles is accompanied by seasoned industry professional; Richard Holder. Holder is the man behind Mile End darlings, Bar Waverly and Brasserie Bernard. We had high hopes for Majestique after hearing these two powerhouses were on board. Thankfully, Majestique did not disappoint! If anything the new restaurant surpassed our expectations.

Bar_Majestique

Majestique seems to exist within an instagram filter.  All of the tables bask in perfect sepia lighting and I’m left scratching my head… how are they doing that?  The man to thank is graphic designer turned decorator, Thomas Csano. Csano designed the smoky interior with detail in mind.  The walls are lined with various flea market knick knacks.  You’ll find old beer bottles intermingled with ceramics straight from grandmas basement.  All the items are arranged in a calculated posh format. Majestique is country comfort delivered in a city slicker format, and we dig it.

maple

Chef Charles Antoine created Majestique’s new menu. He creates an interesting dynamic by mixing old school diner fare with new gourmet touches. We started with an appetizer: Cream of Smoked Mackerel. The dish resembled a high class tuna salad and was served in an adorable dixie cup. The portion was quite generous for an appetizer  and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Next, we did the unthinkable and broke our oyster virginity. The manager David Page insisted we try them as they are a cornerstone of the menu. Majestique receives fresh oysters every day and even has an oyster guy named Max — apparently he’s a big deal in the oyster world. (Side Note: After some light research on “Max the oyster guy” I’d like to know if he’s single.) The tasting was painless and surprisingly delicious. These oysters are going to become a staple in our foodie diet!

Oyster1

Majestique’s manager David Page says “We don’t buy ladies shots we buy them oysters.”

For the main course I tried “Bourgot Beurre d’Algues et Pain Frit.” Which roughly translates to Bourgot in Seaweed butter with fried bread. Just cause we’re all wondering “Bourgot” is the gaspesian’s equivalent to snails. These pseudo snails were swimming in a unique garlic/seaweed butter. Although the dish was quite rich the portion sizes were complimentary.  My partner had the Tostada with sushi rice, tomato and seaweed. This creative take on sushi was a real show stopper. The dish was gluten free, vegan and delicious; so it hit all the bases. The sushi rice was formed into a cracker base and topped with a fresh “sushi salsa.” Finding a vegan dish that stands on it’s own can be difficult. Majestique did an amazing job of appeasing the vegan crowd whilst staying gourmet.

SNAILS

Whether it’s for a couple of drinks or a meal with friends this restobar is worth a visit! The Majestique kitchen is open until 2:00 am every night (except sundays), so feel free to stop in late night while perusing the Main. Relax, enjoy some grub and soak in the spectacular ambience. Simply because Majestique lives up to it’s name sake.

Drogheria Fine opened their doors to the Mile End community approximately five years ago. Since then folks have travelled from near and far to grab a jar of its famed pasta sauce. This special sauce is the only product that Drogheria Fine actively promotes. Yet, they have shown that what they lack in variety, they make up for in quality! The specialty store has under ten products and all of them are based off the prized pasta sauce. Which is titled “La Salsa Della Nonna.” This quite literally translates to “Grandmas Sauce” and is owner Franco Grattuso’s family recipe.

photoPhoto by Ismaël Ulvik

When walking into the tiny shop visitors are instantly greeted with a tantalizing aroma and some tomato eye candy. Customers are able to see the sauce being prepared in the back room, pots’n’all! The small shop can give off a minimalist appearance with only a few jars on the shelves. However, this is due to customers buying the sauce faster than they can stock it, rather than an offbeat design choice.

sauce_edited
After meeting Franco it quickly becomes clear that he is the godfather of Montreal pasta sauce. He explained to us  “With Drogheria I’m continuing the history of my culture and of the history of Montreal culture.” Franco used to disperse his famed sauce from his own restaurant “Il Piatto della Nonna.” However he departed from the busy restaurant industry and chose to focus on dispersing his sauce at a retail level. Thus, Drogheria Fine was born!

Pasta2
The shop is located directly next door to the world famous Fairmont bagel. Franco told us that he likes having Fairmont as a neighbours because “the light’s always on and they have great clientele.” Who would have thought such a partnership could exist between bagels and tomato sauce?

Pasta3
So if you find yourself in the neighbourhood be sure to pop into Drogheria Fine. Have a chat with Franco, enjoy the traditional ambience, and pick up some of his exceptional pasta sauce. You’d better go before it’s sold out!

Le Salon Cardinal opened at the beginning of December last year. Since then it has steadily grown a following from purely hipster word of mouth. Kelsey the manager at Le Salon Cardinal told us “We’ve been slammed almost every weekend since we opened, it’s been incredible!” This hot new addition to the St.Laurent strip could not have come at a better time. The Mile End is overloaded with coffee shops and frankly I’m getting bored.

This delicate tea house is a refreshing addition to a coffee soaked neighborhood. The two level tea salon is located directly on top of the local favorite “The Sparrow.” Le Salon Cardinal was opened by the same owners of The Sparrow in a space that used to be a “bumpin” night club. They have completely revamped the place and it now resembles a victorian dreamscape. Hanging chandeliers, antique bookcases and elegant china prove that creating a palpable atmosphere is all in the details.

montreal cardinal tea room 1

The interior alone was so impressive that we almost forgot our main reason for visiting… the tea!  I don’t pretend to be a professional tea expert but I like to think I can appreciate the difference between a traditional china green and Lipton’s. We tried two of their teas and would recommend both. The first was the Panda Green and the other was an Oolong called tich-nah-something? Both tea’s arrived at the table steeped to perfection, not too weak yet not too strong. The Panda Green was impressive because it held all the lovely aromas of green tea but without the bitter after-bite. The Oolong’s name wasn’t memorable however the tea itself was excellent! It was a perfect balance of bold black tea with fragrant floral undertones. Be sure to get a pot of both for your table!

Le Salon Cardinal also offers a variety of tea time treats. We tried the blueberry scone with jam and clotted cream, as well as the Egg and Watercress sandwich. Both the scone and the sandwich were high quality and very satisfying. The best way to describe the food is “traditional.” They didn’t go out on a limb and try to revolutionize tea time. Good call, some things are better left untouched!

It’s undeniable that The Triple Crown Dinette has created a tangible “buzz” in Montreal’s Little Italy.  The dinette on the corner of Clark and St.Zotique has swiftly become a staple of the local foodscape. They owe their quick start to a unique picnic service. During the summer months Triple Crown sells pre-packed picnic baskets. They come complete with everything necessary for an old style fifties picnic. This isn’t the first time we’ve had a picnic… Yet, the Triple Crown experience feels somewhat revolutionary.

THE PLACE

The inside of Triple Crown is cozy and thrifty. The interior of the restaurant resembles an old style take out counter from the deep south. In the winter months (when picnicking is a dangerous endeavor) it can be tricky to grab a seat. Restaurant goers should aim to arrive before the dinner rush or it may take a while to snag a barstool. At first glance one might ask “Why are we sitting in such close proximity?” or “Couldn’t we have just gone to Aux Vivres?” But it’s not until you taste their homestyle love grub that it all becomes clear… This dinette cooks killer food.

THE PLATE

The Triple Crown Dinette serves up southern favorites that truly taste homemade.  The most popular item on the menu is “Meat and Three’s.”True to it’s namesake you get the option of either fried chicken, smoked brisket or pulled pork, plus the choice of three sides. The sides menu offers a very wide range to choose from, including the ever popular macaroni and cheese, hush puppies, collard greens and sweet potatoes. A notable item is the Mac’n’Cheese. It is quite seriously one of the best variations I’ve ever tasted. The noodles are thick yet cooked al dente. They are covered by a savoury home made cheese sauce and topped with a sweet and salty crumble. The entire dish is the perfect combination of comfort and sin. The same goes for the fried chicken, which is also cooked and seasoned to perfection. The weekly specials at the Triple Crown also deserve an honorable mention! Chef Colin Parry keeps his menu looking fresh by continually changing it up every week.

THE PRICE

Going to eat at triple crown won’t put a hole in your pocket. Entree’s are priced at around 11-16 dollars each and servings are pretty hefty. The weekly specials can run a bit over but it’s forgivable due to the use of seasonal ingredients.

The food at Triple Crown is not necessarily fancy or modern but what it lacks in uniqueness it makes up for in quality. The food is well done, the staff friendly and the feeling in my stomach… Well I’m feeling satisfied. Delivering all the joys of comfort food at quite a comforting price.

This is it! We officially launched our new Montreal Food Tour. It has taken us at least six months of research, practice and tastings, tastings, tastings, to finally offer this new walking tour. Here is what you can expect from this Montreal Food Tour:

1. Montreal’s best Falafel! Organic, local and vegan.

Mile end Montreal food tour

We start the tour at The Green Pantern, which has pretty much become an institution over the years. The Panthère Verte has wonderful ambience and is in the heart of Mile End district.

2. Locally and respectfully raised meat and cheese. Super Tasty and Vegetarian Friendly!

Mile end Montreal food tour

Our Neighbours, The Boucherie Lawrence are fantastic (Our offices are situated few meters from them). The owners are working very hard to offer great products that are rare and difficult to obtain. The decoration and vibe inside is also pretty cool.

3. Fairmount Street – A true human scale square

A Montreal Neighborhood Intersection Morphs into a Wonderful Public Space from Streetfilms on Vimeo.

Have a look at the video above, it describes the changes that have happened on Fairmount Street. This is all thanks to the Mayor Luc Ferrandez who implemented all these great changes! Such as adding benches, colors and bicycle lanes.

4. Mile End’s Secret Back Alleys

Montreal Mile End Food tour

You can count more than 500 back alleys in Montreal. All of them are very unique and truly interesting to visit. The ones we visit in our tour display a little bit of Montreal history and stories.

 5. Mind-Blowing ice-cream, Montreal’s best summer desert

Montreal best ice cream

We always visit Kem Coba during the summer. Unfortunately, they are closed during the winter. Their ice creams are crazy good! The two owners are a couple who decided to start a ice-cream shop after they travelled to Asia.

The Part 2 of the tour will be written in a Second Article. Stay tuned!
