Here are 15 things to do in Montreal this winter that will warm your heart and spice up your life just the right amount.

The snow has fallen, the mittens are out, and you’re wondering what you’re gonna do without Montreal’s amazing terraces until May. It’s okay, we’ve got you!

Let’s start with exploring other guides you might be interested in. 15. Check out the city’s best new bars and restaurants

Things to do montreal winter - cool restaurants

Gathering around a table with friends and loved ones is always a tradition when it’s cold out. Warm up from the inside out at these exciting new places to eat in Montreal this winter.

Le Central:

Indecisive eaters say goodbye to date night arguments and settling on the nearest restaurant to get out of the cold, and say hello to Le Central where you have time (and warmth) to peruse all your options as you walk around its 25 restaurants. Any time, any day and no matter your mood, Le Central has something for you. From tartare at Mignonette, burgers at Le Gras Dur, to ice cream at Bagado, Le Central is just as flexible as you. Grab lunch or savour a 5 à 7 on your own terms.
30 Sainte-Catherine West

Time Out Market:

The industrial exposed cement walls, sleek wood floor, dimmed warm lights and communal eating tables of the newly opened Time Out market feel like a 600 person family dinner. The food hall’s mission statement is to provide the best of the best that Montreal has to offer, so you’ll never go wrong, whether you’re craving some pasta from Il Miglio or a plate from Le Club Chasse et Pêche — yes really! The Old Montreal fine dining staple has a stall in this food market.

Things to do Montreal winter

Vinvinvin:

This Nordic wine bar in Petite-Patrie is anything but cold. The space is colourful and eclectic, with a 50s diner flair, and a dark green ceiling for that cozy wine drunk feeling. Vinvinvin specializes in wines from central and northern Europe, categorized by their palate, like dry, punk, or tarantino (actual categories on their menu!). Share some artfully plated food while you’re here, like the fried oysters and calamari, or a financier with pair and sunflower to satisfy that sweet tooth. There’s no better way to bring colour to your cheeks this winter than by sipping on some incredible northern wines and enjoying the inviting atmosphere!
290 Beaubien East

Épicerie Sue:

Rosemont favourite Sandwicherie Sue has opened up a brand new second location on Duluth: Épicerie Sue! They’ll be serving many of their classic Bahn-Mi style sandwiches, and along with the usual Bahn-Mi flavours there are some unexpected and fun additions. Feeling some ginger chicken or lemongrass tofu? Wash it all down with some bubble tea or a Vietnamese coffee, or pick up some East Asian snacks (or the house sauce!), not that you’ll be hungry after your sandwich.

14. Take an Old Montreal Food & Drink Tour

It’s no secret that Old Montreal is a gem to be discovered. The Old Port, the European architecture, the cobblestone streets, etc etc… but what is kind of new is its foodie scene. With more and more people moving to the area, remarkable food vendors have been opening up and are well-worth discovering. The Old Montreal Food Tour takes you on a journey to many of them, highlighting Quebec culture and history as it does. What better way to enjoy the magic of winter than warm up and eat food, and then pop back out to discover the winter land for just a little bit, and then warm up with even more food!? The tour even features some warm soup broth during these cold months.

Le Salon Cardinal opened at the beginning of December last year. Since then it has steadily grown a following from purely hipster word of mouth. Kelsey the manager at Le Salon Cardinal told us “We’ve been slammed almost every weekend since we opened, it’s been incredible!” This hot new addition to the St.Laurent strip could not have come at a better time. The Mile End is overloaded with coffee shops and frankly I’m getting bored.

montreal cardinal tea room

This delicate tea house is a refreshing addition to a coffee soaked neighborhood. The two level tea salon is located directly on top of the local favorite “The Sparrow.” Le Salon Cardinal was opened by the same owners of The Sparrow in a space that used to be a “bumpin” night club. They have completely revamped the place and it now resembles a victorian dreamscape. Hanging chandeliers, antique bookcases and elegant china prove that creating a palpable atmosphere is all in the details.

montreal cardinal tea room 1

The interior alone was so impressive that we almost forgot our main reason for visiting… the tea!  I don’t pretend to be a professional tea expert but I like to think I can appreciate the difference between a traditional china green and Lipton’s. We tried two of their teas and would recommend both. The first was the Panda Green and the other was an Oolong called tich-nah-something? Both tea’s arrived at the table steeped to perfection, not too weak yet not too strong. The Panda Green was impressive because it held all the lovely aromas of green tea but without the bitter after-bite. The Oolong’s name wasn’t memorable however the tea itself was excellent! It was a perfect balance of bold black tea with fragrant floral undertones. Be sure to get a pot of both for your table!

montreal cardinal tea room

Le Salon Cardinal also offers a variety of tea time treats. We tried the blueberry scone with jam and clotted cream, as well as the Egg and Watercress sandwich. Both the scone and the sandwich were high quality and very satisfying. The best way to describe the food is “traditional.” They didn’t go out on a limb and try to revolutionize tea time. Good call, some things are better left untouched!

If you’ve got a lazy afternoon to kill, why not spend it in style at Le Salon Cardinal? It’s a fantastic place to nest away from the cold, drink impeccable tea, and sink into victorian chic.We promise at the very least your Instagram photos will make the trip worthwhile… #LeSalonCardinal #teaisbackbitches #mtl #aheadofthetrend #inheaven

Montreal tours

You can find any type of Montreal Tours in our beautiful city.

You can get walking Tours, food tours, beer tours, Bus tours, bicycle tours, scooters  tours, shopping tours, wine Tours, fishing tours, alternative tours, old montreal tours, carriage tours, etc.

We haven’t tried them all, but we surely love our industry and all the people working for it.

So we made a list of the best Montreal tours and sightseeing activities you can do in Montreal. Here are they, separated for their specialization. We didn’t put any Bus Tours, since we think they are boring, overpriced and not environmentally oriented.

Please be free to contact us if we have forgotten your enterprise!

Old Montreal Walking Tours:

  1. Free Montreal Tours:
    • Discover the essential historic sites of Old Town.

  2. Guidatour:

Local Montreal Tours used to offer a Free Old Montreal Tour as you may have seen in our tripadvisor recent reviews.

We have decided to withdraw the free walking tour off the Localmontrealtours.com website and to start a new free walking tour sister company.

As you can see here on http://freemontrealtours.com we still offer free walking tours but independently from Local Montreal Tours.

We have created a new branding with a new logo as you can see here:

Local Montreal Tours

Montreal : A (World Class) Craft Beer Destination

As we say on our webpage, Montréal is the second city in the World where you can find the most Breweries, which makes her perfectly suitable for Brewpub Tours. When we say Breweries, we include all the little Brewpubs, the Craft Breweries and the major international Breweries that are based in Montreal. You can count at the moment over 20 active and well known Breweries. Here is a list we did to gather all the Beer Industry we have here in Montreal.

International and National Breweries based in Montreal

  1. Molson-Coors
  2. Bière Boréale (situated 40 minutes from Montréal)
  3. Brasseurs RJ
  4. St-Ambroise McCauslan

Montreal’s top 15 Brewpubs

A new Brewpub is basically opening every year. We might missing few ones!

  1. Le Cheval Blanc
  2. L’Amère à Boire
  3. Le Dieu du Ciel
  4. Le Benelux
  5. Le St-Bock
  6. Le Brouhaha Brewpub
  7. Brasserie Résevoir
  8. Le Helm
  9. La Succurcale
  10. Les Soeurs-Grises de Montréal
  11. The Brutopia
  12. Les Brasseurs de Montréal
  13. Vices et Versas Bar (not an actual Brewpub, but full of craft beers)
  14. Les 3 Brasseurs (situated at three different locations)
  15. L’espace public

Craft Breweries

1. Brasseurs sans Gluten

2. Bierbrier

Montreal’s Number 1 Beer Event

The Mondial de la bière

So yes, Portland (Oregon) is still the first Breweries City in the world, with more than 35 Breweries. But, get ready, Portland we are coming! If you would like to book a tour with Local Montreal Tours, visit the Montreal Brewpub Experience – Beer Tour section. If some brewpubs or breweries have been forgotten, please contact us so we can add them in our list.
