Open 24 hours, and selling those mini cream cheese cups to go with your bagel on the go, stumble into this famed joint for a warm, gooey  snack on your way home from the bar.

19. Take a stroll down Prince-Arthur, fall in love by the Carré St-Louis fountain

One of the best places for tourists to visit is Saint Helen’s Island. The island is home to great festivals like Osheaga at Jean Drapeau park, LaRonde, Montreal’s Biosphere and Piknic Electronik. Under Alexander Calder’s statue, L’Homme, tourists and locals flock to dance to the electronic beats of local and international DJs. Let’s be honest, Piknic is the perfect excuse to drink in the middle of a nice summer day. Shake your booty on the dance floor at the main stage or sunbathe by the river accompanied by a signature Piknic bucket of alcohol. For more information, click here.

15. Ride Down the Lachine Canal with Ma Bicyclette

Ma Bicyclette is a bike rental service right on the Canal. The folk here do repairs, sell snacks, and are some of the friendliest staff around. It’s a great option for tourists to get the Lachine Canal experience without having their own bike, but it’s also a favourite with locals because of the good vibes, location, and the commitment-free aspect of riding around this neck of the woods. Extra perks that totally beat renting a bixi: guided bike tours, and all rentals include a helmet, lock, saddle bag and map.

14. Discover Montreal’s history at the Pointe a Callière museum

Walk down the steps to the museum’s archaeological crypt and see the only remnants of the 1744 fortifications that used to stand there. One of their temporary exhibits, Hello, Montréal!, looks into the history of Bell and the evolution of the telephone in Montreal. For more information, click here.

13. Wander Around the Botanical Gardens

It might be a little out of the way, but this veritable oasis of lushery is something every Montrealer should make a trip to, at least every few months (especially in winter). Not only is it breathtakingly gorgeous, but it’s like a mini vacation: with tons of different plant and flower species imported from all over, alternating exhibits and events, not only does it (literally) bring you back to your roots but the organizers have brought miniature pieces of paradise directly to our city.

12. Grab a beer on the Le Sainte-Élisabeth terrace

The Farine Five Roses sign and silo #5 are both the products of the industrial revolution of Montreal. They still stand today as the last vestiges of an industrial Lachine Canal. These heritage sites are grandiose and beautiful to look at (if you’re into unmaintained industrial architecture). An excursion to these landmarks is a great way to learn about Montreal’s history and even better for a photoshoot!

The mountain and it’s 30 foot tree topper of a cross look good from the ground, but the view is even better at the top. Head to the lookout and Chalet du Mont Royal for a stunning photo op, or over to Lac aux Castors to grab a snack at the pavilion and have a picnic by the water. You can get to the top by walking up gently sloping gravel paths, bike, bus, car or, literally, by going off the beaten path onto less travelled trails for a full experience of nature in the heart of the city. It’s always a good time for a breath of fresh air!

®Mickaël A. Bandassak

In the heart of scenic Old Montreal, sits a stylish new Italian “caffe” that combines timeless Parisian elegance with today’s sensibilities. Un Po’ Di Più is the brand-new venture by the culinary genius behind Foxy and Olive & Gourmando, which have truly become mainstays of the Montreal food scene. Upscale without being stuffy, it’s easy to see how this new enterprise is ready to become a heavyweight in its own right. From morning to night, they serve colourful and imaginative plates, cocktails, and, of course, coffee. Stop by to slow down.

Mon Lapin is a much anticipated new wine bar in Little Italy. Opened by the team behind Joe Beef – a famed Montreal establishment – the cozy corner spot doesn’t have any of the ego that can come with a star studded team. It seats only 35 customers at a time and serves 15 constantly rotating dishes made of local farm fresh ingredients that strive to please the mouth instead of the eyes. Most importantly, it features a tasteful selection of natural wines, which take centre stage in the middle of the room. Mon Lapin doesn’t take reservations, so stop by soon to see what the buzz is about!

Hanzo is also brought to you several big names in the restaurant game, coming from projects in Montreal, Toronto and Quebec City. Together, it’s a winning recipe and this new venture is definitely living up to expectations. Inside, you’ll find the decor is playfully inspired by the Crazy 88 scene in Kill Bill, an influence that also makes its way onto the menu. Despite the fun of the setting, they’re serving some seriously good Japanese food. The easily shareable izakaya dishes are innovative and packed with flavour, and the cocktails are sure to hit the right note. Stepping into Hanzo off the Old Montreal streets is like being transported into a cinematic dreamscape that will definitley leave you satisfied, for real.

Former sous-chef at world-renowned restaurant Toqué is back with this new co-venture. Moccione is, by comparison, a simpler place and focuses instead on creating a warm atmosphere that makes visitors feel right at home. They serve simple Italian dishes with authentic ingredients alongside a comprehensive wine list, each the product of many years of experience and expertise. Moccione is upscale without being over-the-top, fitting perfectly into its cozy Villeray location. The restaurant only opened recently, but definitley got it right. Its simple elegance and effortless atmosphere (that can only be the product of a lot of thought) leaves diners excited to come back for more.

Moleskine is never really one thing. With an upper level dedicated to refined Italian dining, and a lower level that serves wood-oven pizza (for here or to go), as well as ice-cream, Moleskine is a restaurant with a split personality that offers something for everyone. Both upstairs and down you’ll find innovation that packs a punch: hearty and memorable dishes above, simple and well-made bites below. Its name, even, is a nod to Nota Bene, a charming stationary store next door. Nominated by EnRoute for its list of best Canadian restaurants in 2017, Moleskine is worth paying a visit – or two.

Another wine bar member of the Joe Beef family, Le Vin Papillon is currently ranked at number 5 in Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants. Not quite as new as Mon Lapin, but just as witty and fresh, it specializes in vegetable dishes, however, sometimes cooked in butter or duck fat, they are not quite vegetarian. Their decadent ham is also turning heads. Paired with the roasted caramel flavours of their innovative comfort foods is a wide selection natural wines – all in a cozy Little Burgundy location. In the summer, you can hope to get a seat on the amazing patio, but come early as they do not take reservations.

Escondite is the city’s favourite funky Mexican restaurant. Not only is the food fun, if you’re looking for a little help in the conversation-starter department, Escondite is  definitely your friend. Their décor consists of as many twists as their dishes: images of Mexican wrestlers and neon lights line the walls, and everything from pork and pineapple tacos to smoked meat poutine assemble on plates. Escondite translates to “hideout,” which makes sense because hiding out here is an experience you won’t want to miss. If you’re still unconvinced, that’s okay: they also offer signature drinks that you can enjoy on their terrace in the summer, making it one of the best places to eat in Montreal.

12. Foiegwa

In the heart of St-Henri, we begin with a bit of humour at this French-with-hints-of-American restaurant, Foiegwa. The name was inspired by how anglophones pronounce foie gras–without the ‘Rrr’–which is one of the many French words Americans and Canadians butcher. Speaking of butcher, Foiegwa serves-up a delectable selection of meat: dishes like their boeuf bourguignon, their poached black cod, and their locally-sourced, organic fried chicken. Foiegwa is a fine-dining experience without the pretentiousness: it’s located in a venue that formerly housed the Quebec fast-food joint, La Belle Province. Its decor is simple: white tiles line the walls and ceiling and dozens of sketches of famous Quebec figures are mounted on the walls. You’ll find American-style cocktails to pair with your meal here at Foie Gras–oops–Foiegwa.

With the finest attention to detail, they manage to pull off a dining experience that is upscale and looks after your every need, yet carries the wamth of meeting old friends. Plus, the well-designed decor definitel lives up to the name. Their tasting menu comes with 9 courses and is crafted from local ingredients. For drink pairings they offer wine, naturally, as well as a non-alcoholic option that makes this the perfect place to celebrate a special occassion as a whole family, or simply have a superbly romantic meal.

A List of the Best Coffee in Montreal

My favorite coffee spot? You’ve probably never heard of it. This list of best coffee in Montreal is in no particular order, because it was too hard to deduce a fair sequence without being shunned by the Coffee Gods.

14. Café Brooklyn

71 Rue Saint Viateur Est

375400_220318024769704_853802558_n

Fresh food, good coffee, reasonable prices and a friendly ambiance. This cafe started off as a 20th century modern furniture store, but rapidly morphed into a coffee shop. While you’re there, try the coffee cake (it is baked by the owner’s aunt every day)!

13. Le Cagibi

5490 Boulevard Saint-Laurent

best coffee in montreal

This place is as cool as it gets: a vegetarian coffee shop that doubles as a concert venue. Not only can you savour excellent coffee here, but you can watch the staff prep your burritos, admire the quirky decor, and experience an authentic Montreal apartment feel as you walk on the creaky floorboards. With mismatched chairs, tables, and dishes, the veritable bohemian atmosphere is sure to imbue you and your coffee during your stay. Oh and, they don’t charge extra for soy.

12. Cafe Myriade

1432 Rue Mackay
1000 Sainte Catherine Street West
4627 Saint-Denis Street

Best coffee in Montreal

This ever-popular coffee destination (that’s often the sustenance of Concordia students) is more than a pretty cafe. Myriade only works with quality-focused roasters–mainly from 49th Parallel Roasters in Vancouver, BC–but they also feature guest roasts from across North America and Europe. Their coffee tastes even better because it’s guilt-free: they pay the farmers above the standard Fair-Trade prices. With their seasonal menu, you’ll have a chance to taste a myriad of flavours at Myriade.

11. Club Social

180 St. Viateur Ouest Montreal

Club sociale Best Coffee Shops in Montreal Mile End

Continuing up the Mile-End’s St-Viateur, you’ll eventually encounter Olympico’s rival, Club Social. This coffee shop’s terrace makes for one of the best (but well known) summer hangout spots. Trees surround it, locals wave to each other, and (coffee) love is in the air. Ordering from here makes you feel like you’re instantly part of the neighbourhood thanks to the staff’s friendliness. Make sure you order a latte, they’re 2 bucks!

10. Pikolo Espresso Bar

3418b Park Ave

best coffee in montreal

Once Marie-Eve Laroche discovered Australia’s coffee culture, she decided to bring a taste of it back to Montreal. Pikolo Espresso Bar says it all in the name: it’s a small space that serves espresso-based drinks. Laroche works with Canadian roasters Phil & Sebastian and Microtorrefacteur Saint-Henri to accentuate the flavour of each unique coffee.

9. Café Résonance

5175 Avenue du Parc

best coffee in montreal

This vegan jazz-cafe is huge, very low key, and has a great ambiance! They often host reading and music events. And just in case coffee actually does keep you up at night, they’ll keep you company: open hours go until midnight every day of the week.

8. Dispatch

best coffee in montreal

Dispatch was started by Chrissy Durcak who began by serving the coffee out of a truck. Her philosophy was to spend time cultivating a relationship with the farmers they get their coffee from. Having now removed the training wheels, Dispatch serves up a tasty cup of coffee in three different locations around Montreal. The coffee shops’ ultra-minimalist decor doesn’t reflect their coffee–those beans are packed with flavour–because Dispatch is riding the third wave of coffee hard.

267 Rue Saint Zotique O

7. Cafe Odessa

65 rue Beaubien East

Best coffee in motnreal

From the owners of Le Vieux Vélo popular brunch eatery in Rosemont comes Odessa, an industrial-style cafe with a nautical theme based the eponymous port city in the Ukraine. This third wave coffee shop gets their beans from Pilot Coffee Roasters who try and directly source every bean roasted. Baristas are particularly friendly here and easy to have a little chat with as you sip on your drink of choice.

6. Arts Café

201 Avenue Fairmount Ouest

10330263_639351526141530_6620909786802541228_n

The service here is amazing: you are always greeted with a smile! They have generous portions, quality coffee, rustic decor and oh- did I mention the great service?

5. Olympico

124 Rue St-Viateur Ouest

Olympico Best Coffee Shops in Montreal Mile End

They have legendary coffee; it’s fantastic and you will not be disappointed. It can get very crowded though- so maybe you shouldn’t come here… It’s not even that great. (To many people know about the goodness that this place can offer!!!)

4. Café Falco

5605 Avenue de Gaspé

Best coffee shops in Montreal

The layers of flavour to be found in Falco’s various coffees are gastronomical. The place has an industrial feeling to it but has a great ambiance and vibe. They offer a variety of food that have a Japanese twist to them. Come here for lunch!

3. Melinas Phyllo Bar

5733 du Parc

Best coffee in Montreal

Melina’s is a cute, little shop that serves delicious Greek coffee and Greek pastries. The staff here is super friendly and chatty which makes you want to come back.

Le Dépanneur Café is charming and unique, and offers delicious healthy meals and specialty drinks. They play relaxing lounge music, but always invite local artists to sign up to play live music. (Beware this place can get awfully crowded).

1. MELK Bar à Café

1206 Stanley St
5612 Monkland Ave

Tostada

Don’t be surprised if you feel the need to name drop after visiting the Plateau’s new restobar “Majestique” The urge to inform (a.k.a brag) to your friends is a valid reaction.  Simply because this spot is the classic “plateau” experience . The brand new joint is located right on the Main at 4105 St.Laurent. The building used to house a hot dog factory called “Hot Dog Lesters.” Today the original “Delli-Cite” sign still hangs outside. Perhaps it’s a kitschy reminder of simple times; Montreal’s hot dog era.

DELISIGN

Today the space has been taken over by a culinary dream team. Starting with Chef Charles Antoine Crete; who is best known for his work at Toqué! and Brasserie T! Charles is accompanied by seasoned industry professional; Richard Holder. Holder is the man behind Mile End darlings, Bar Waverly and Brasserie Bernard. We had high hopes for Majestique after hearing these two powerhouses were on board. Thankfully, Majestique did not disappoint! If anything the new restaurant surpassed our expectations.

Bar_Majestique

Majestique seems to exist within an instagram filter.  All of the tables bask in perfect sepia lighting and I’m left scratching my head… how are they doing that?  The man to thank is graphic designer turned decorator, Thomas Csano. Csano designed the smoky interior with detail in mind.  The walls are lined with various flea market knick knacks.  You’ll find old beer bottles intermingled with ceramics straight from grandmas basement.  All the items are arranged in a calculated posh format. Majestique is country comfort delivered in a city slicker format, and we dig it.

deer

Secondbar

maple

Chef Charles Antoine created Majestique’s new menu. He creates an interesting dynamic by mixing old school diner fare with new gourmet touches. We started with an appetizer: Cream of Smoked Mackerel. The dish resembled a high class tuna salad and was served in an adorable dixie cup. The portion was quite generous for an appetizer  and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Next, we did the unthinkable and broke our oyster virginity. The manager David Page insisted we try them as they are a cornerstone of the menu. Majestique receives fresh oysters every day and even has an oyster guy named Max — apparently he’s a big deal in the oyster world. (Side Note: After some light research on “Max the oyster guy” I’d like to know if he’s single.) The tasting was painless and surprisingly delicious. These oysters are going to become a staple in our foodie diet!

Oyster1

Majestique’s manager David Page says “We don’t buy ladies shots we buy them oysters.”

For the main course I tried “Bourgot Beurre d’Algues et Pain Frit.” Which roughly translates to Bourgot in Seaweed butter with fried bread. Just cause we’re all wondering “Bourgot” is the gaspesian’s equivalent to snails. These pseudo snails were swimming in a unique garlic/seaweed butter. Although the dish was quite rich the portion sizes were complimentary.  My partner had the Tostada with sushi rice, tomato and seaweed. This creative take on sushi was a real show stopper. The dish was gluten free, vegan and delicious; so it hit all the bases. The sushi rice was formed into a cracker base and topped with a fresh “sushi salsa.” Finding a vegan dish that stands on it’s own can be difficult. Majestique did an amazing job of appeasing the vegan crowd whilst staying gourmet.

SNAILS

Whether it’s for a couple of drinks or a meal with friends this restobar is worth a visit! The Majestique kitchen is open until 2:00 am every night (except sundays), so feel free to stop in late night while perusing the Main. Relax, enjoy some grub and soak in the spectacular ambience. Simply because Majestique lives up to it’s name sake.

Bienvenue au majestique
