We recommend going to Ma Poule Mouillee on Rachel, and then bringing your chorizo or chicken poutine to Park Lafontaine across the street. It’s actually a favourite summer activity amongst locals, so here’s a tip to skip the line: call before you go and order in advance! Magic. Nearby is La Banquise,  another popular spot (perhaps because they’re open 24/7). This restaurant is also the largest, which means it can accept big groups at a moments notice. Montreal Bachelor party perfection! If you can’t squeeze it in on Sunday, 3:00 AM is also a good time to enjoy a poutine.

10. Get a morning thrill by… Speed boating!

Like any city, Montreal’s got its famous, iconic, must-eat-at eateries. Schwartz might just be at the top of that list. The classic Montreal smoked meat joint, all you’ll find here is smoked meat, rye bread, mustard, and pickles. They keep it simple, and they keep it delicious. You might want to factor in waiting time and wear some sunscreen though: the constant lineup outside is just part of the Schwartz experience.

8. The Piknic Electronic – Afternoon DJ Jam

If you’ve got room in your Sunday itinerary, consider a Piknic Electronic afternoon! 5. Grab yourselves a kick-ass souvenir

Okay, shopping might not be the manliest thing you can do. But hey, how else are you gonna get the manliest attire to bring back home? While you’re in one of the best looking cities in the world, you might as well steal a couple of our tips and tricks to bring back to your new life back home! Clark Street Mercantile is a Montreal based “man shop” which curates the best man products out there. Beard wax, toothpicks, flasks… If you’ve got the time to bump up your style, check this store out in between your many Montreal meals.

4. Enjoy Dinner at a nice restaurant / Montreal Bachelor Party Dinner

Montreal’s foodie scene is totally booming right now. With many restaurants seeking to put their own spin on the classics, competition is fierce. Take advantage of this while you’re in town! Many restaurants are also quite affordable, if you are looking to lower your costs. It’s best to make a reservation a few days/weeks in advance. If you forgot to book (oops!) these are some nice restaurants/bars which would be pleased to seat you:

  • Au Pied de Cochon – This is a MUST! Reservation required weeks in advance. Yep, it’s that popular.
  • Miracolo restaurant

Or feast on some Canadian beef with your whole crew @ Gibby’s Steakhouse

When it comes to a perfect group dinner in Montreal, Gibby’s Steakhouse in Old Montreal has everything the heart desires: Cozy stone walls, great location and most importantly, outstanding Canadian beef steaks and seafood for you and your gang.

Even better, they have plenty of room for big reservations making them a popular venue for local receptions and intimate dates alike. Quality doesn’t disappoint and they even offer group menus. The restaurant occupies several rooms in a historical building and even boasts a stylish courtyard, lounge and alcove.
Founded in 1970, Gibby’s has withstood the test of time thanks to its consistent quality, unique setting and hospitable atmosphere.

After their French Onion Soup and Ribeye, you’ll be ready for whatever the rest of the night as in stock.

3. Chill in a park and have a beer

It’s beautiful, free, and fun! This is probably why many Montrealers do this every weekend. Parc Lafontaine, Parc Laurier, and Parc Mont-Royal are all great spots to lounge around. The rule here is that you can drink in the park as long as you’ve got a meal. So pick up a few bagels, some cream cheese, a few brews, and you’re good to go!  If you want some extra fun and are into ping-pong or petanque, Parc Laurier’s got your back.

2.*We Apologize in Advance* Have a 10$ daytime lap dance!

Many strip clubs and bars are open during the day! Why not have a quick dance and laugh with your pals? Of course, it won’t be the 10/10 girls, but you’re doing it for the laugh not the ass.  We can’t guarantee your satisfaction on this one unfortunately! Pro tip: club Super Sex has a “free” buffet during the day. Cut down those costs…?

1. Enjoy your Bach Party!

Things to do in Little Italy Montreal

Welcome to Little Italy Montreal, where pizza is in the air, and the sights are sure to charm. This quaint neighbourhood is an increasingly popular spot for new homeowners, date-goers, and out-of-towners. The culprits? Jean-Talon market, cute parks, and the district’s stunning architecture are sure to blame. But Little Italy is much more than great food and nice buildings: it’s a district rich in culture and history, equipped with its own colourful, vibrant energy.

But before we delve into its many delights… Little Italy is located between St-Denis and St-Laurent, and spans from Jean-Talon to St-Zotique. If you enter via St-Laurent, you’ll go through its unmissable Little Italy archway.

Grab a slice

littel-italy-montreal-pizza-napoletanna

Okay, okay… We get it: you came here for the pizza.

A good place to start is Pizzeria Napoletana. Napoletana opened many moons ago in 1948, and claims to be the first pizzeria in Montreal. It evolved from a casual spot where immigrant workers would come to play pool and cards, to being one of the most popular eateries in Little Italy. Simplicity and authenticity make their pizzas a memorable affair. Oh and, it’s BYOW, so…get on it.

189 Dante Street
 napoletana.com

Next up, Elio Pizzeria! Elio is known for its amazing tomato sauce, thin crust pies, and outstanding service. Come here after a long day of Little Italy activities and let yourself relax with a nice scrumptious slice. This popular neighbourhood joint will make you feel like a local and let you blend in for a sample of authentic Little Italy living.

Jean-Talon Market

little-italy-montreal-jean-talon-marketlittle-italy-montreal-jean-talon-veglittle-italy-montreal-jean-talon-market-eats

Jean-Talon market is affectionately thought of as Little Italy’s main artery. Bustling through the market are locals, visitors, chefs, families, friends, lovers… It’s a hub of hungry, happy activity. Come join them for an afternoon at the market and sample different cheeses, meats, maybe even some freshly squeezed juice! Discover artisanal goodies, locally-grown produce, and of course, the world’s best maple syrup. We like Fromagerie Hamel for its exquisite cheeses, Délices de la Mer for its high quality seafood, and la Crêperie du Marché for some sinful crêpes.

7070 Henri-Julien Avenue

Savour some local craft beer

litte-italy-montreal-vice-versa

Right on the outskirts of Little Italy, you’ll find Montreal’s top craft beer destination, Rosemont. The district is home to many micro breweries, making it an excellent way to discover Montreal’s craft beer scene.

Birra: Steps away from Jean-Talon market, Birra is perfectly situated for some relaxation at the end of a charged touring day. Birra uses a local brewing coop, MABRASSERIE, to brew their beer. That means that the beer here is part of a bigger movement, the neighbourhood’s need and love of good brews! Come be part of the buzz.

The menu is seasonal, but you can bet that their dishes like the crab fettuccini or octopus will satisfy that Italy culinary trip yearning, albeit temporarily. Come here if you’re looking to be impressed and/or impress another. Reservations are a must. 48 Dante, impastomtl.ca

Bottega Pizzeria is a great pick if you’re looking for a lively, laid-back evening, but still have a three course dinner at a fair price. Pizza, meat balls, lamb, pasta… Their menu holds many gems, and Montreal’s known it since they opened, making it forever popular. Reservations recommended. 65 St-Zotique E. bottega.ca

Dinette Triple Crown: Have you heard the saying, “if it seems too good to be true, it probably is”? Triple Crown takes that saying and squashes it fast. American style BBQ chicken with all the fixings, mac ‘n cheese, and most importantly… picnic baskets you can bring to the park across the street!!!!! Yes, yes, yes. Take advantage of this picnic facilitation for your next romantic soirée. Sinful food and romance have never gone so perfectly together. 6704 Clark, dinettetriplecrown.com

Cul-sec is a wine bar with a private import selection (including organic and natural wines). If you’re looking to treat yourself with some elegant organic dishes and rare wine finds, Cul de Sac is your spot. 29 Beaubien Est; culsec.ca

A retro look, high quality ingredients and inventive takes on snack bar classics (think poutine cheeseburger) make Chez Tousignant a popular lunch and dinner spot. Put on your new floral print dress shirt and walk on over. 6956 Drolet; cheztousignant.com

Sample a new neighbourhood: The Mile Ex

mile-ex-montreal

A newly residential neighbourhood is hard to come by in a city like Montreal, but when industrial buildings turn into condos, that’s what you get. You also get trendy cafés, biergartens, and trendy restaurants. Mile Ex is exactly this, and being adjacent to Little Italy (and often considered part of it), you’ll want take a stroll through. Restaurant Manitoba, Café Dispatch, and Alexandraplatz bar are a few must-sees. Check out our guide on the hood for tips and pointers here.

Plaza St-Hubert

plaza-st-huber

The plaza marks itself by a metal and glass awning, covering all of its 300+ merchants. A bit of an eyesore, you won’t make your way here for the sight seeing. It seems a bit mysterious at first: why would they make this street look so… stale? But it’s part of a longer story: St-Hubert was the subject of many project proposals seeking to protect its mom and pop merchants while attracting new business and shoppers. The first was the biggest shopping center in the world, the second a pedestrian mall, and the third… its now infamous sidewalk covering! The result is a winter-friendly spot to shop, an association of vendors that stick together and serve their community. Visiting the plaza is well worth it if you want to get a glimpse into a local’s shopping spot, or if you want to witness first-hand a strange piece of Montreal’s development history. maplaza.ca/en/

St-Hubert Plaza is located on St-Hubert Street between Bellechasse and Jean-Talon

Check out Madonna Della Difesa church

little-italy-montreal-la-iglesia-de-nuestra-senora-de-la-defensa

Madonna Della Difesa church, also known as Notre Dame de la Défense, is an architectural sweet spot. It was built by Italian immigrants in 1919 to commemorate the miracle of Madonna’s apparition in Molise. It marks its claim to fame with by combining both breathtakingly beautiful and controversial elements. On the side of beauty, architect R. Montbirant painted the church’s remarkable frescoes based on tartist Guido Nincheri’s drawings. For the controversial part? Inside you will find a painting of Mussolini. Without commenting on the latter, the church is an authentic representation of the era it was built in, and is well worth a visit.

Take a coffee break

Little Italy Montreal

Montreal’s Little Italy marks itself apart from the rest of the city in terms of coffee shops. Not only by way of its particularly deliciously strong coffee, but Little Italy swaps its most of its cafes carry an authentic, mom and pop quality to them.

Caffe Italia: Authentic vibes are at their highest here, with a 50/60’s decor and Italian men at the bar sipping espresso. 6840 Boul St-Laurent, (514) 495-0059

Caffè San Simeon: Coffee nerds, addicts, enthusiasts, and allies congregate at San Simeon for arguably the best cafe freddo in town. Seriously. People go nuts for the insanely strong San Simeon coffee. Their classic (and adorable!) selection of desserts are a quick sell, too. Summer months get the added bonus of a front deck, a feature that takes latte-sipping from a 5 to a 10, easily. 39 Dante, Instagram

Café Oui Mais Non: This sassily named spot embraces vintage goods in its boutique, caffeine on its espresso machine, and even food and beer in between! Café Oui Mais Non translates to Coffee Yes But No, a feeling we can all relate to, let’s be honest. Make your way here for a cute ambiance in which to sip a mean espresso or smooth latte. 72 Rue Jarry E, cafeouimaisnon.com

Parks Galore

littel-italy-montreal-parc-dante
little-italy-montreal-parc-dante

Located right around the corner from Little Italy, Jarry Park is nothing to scoff at. One of the city’s biggest parks, it comes equipped with paths,  a pond, ducks (!!), a fountain, fields, a pool… ah the good life. Google Maps Link

Little Italy Park is much smaller, but size isn’t everything, right? This is the kind of park that takes up a whole block and acts as an oasis for cute dates and breaths of fresh air. It’s got a gazebo, picnic tables, and a few benches for that optimal sun soaking. What makes it extra special however, is its relation to Dinette Triple Crown. Located across the street, the decadent American style eatery provides cute picnic baskets with their meals so that you can eat in the parc. Yes, it’s a magical thing. Google Maps Link

Dante Park is another quaint spot, right across from the famous Madona Della Difesa church. Benches invite you for a bask in the sun. A bocce ball area invites you for some good ol’ bocce. Rest here and discuss your experience at Madona Della Difesa after you visit the architectural wonder. Google Maps link

Bakeries

little-italy-montreal-beigne

Trou de Beigne: Did you hear the news? Doting a cute fancy doughnut in your hand as you walk down the street is the new way to affirm your fashion status. Out with the Michael Kors purses, in with the bacon maple goodies! Seriously though, Trou de Beigne (French for doughnut hole) is a doughy paradise of mouth watering concoctions like Nutella Banana and yep, Maple Bacon. Made fresh daily, you gotta try ’em. Artistan baked goods at their best. 156 Saint-Zotique East; troudebeigne.com

Alati-Casserta: One of the things about Little Italy that makes it so charming is its blend of old and new, trendy and traditional. Alati-Casserta keeps things old school, just to keep us in check. It’s one of the oldest kids on the block, and fills cannolis to order. Mm hmm. Freshly filled sweet ricotta goodness, and crisp exteriors, made on the spot. They’ve got tons of other creations too, and are a must-have while you’re in the area. 227 Dante; alaticaserta.com

La Cornetteria: Do you remember the cronut craze? La Cornetteria took part in the wave by creating Montreal’s first cronut, attracting Montrealers from all over to try the yummy things. They’ve kept them ever since, and have a wide variety of flavours. Come sample ’em for yourself, and sip an espresso while you’re there. 6528 St-Laurent; lacornetteria.com

Pro tip: Try one cannoli at each bakery. Compare and contrast. Repeat.

Explore the Underground City of Montreal

In french we call it le RÉSO (réseau) or La Ville Souterraine, which translates to “the network” and “the Montreal underground city.” First built during the 1960’s, it now connects shoppers to over 1,000 retailers and restaurants through a network of tunnels, corridors and plazas. This city beneath the city, is most advantageous during those long winter months, making for convenient shopping and commuting without the slush and oversized coat. Needless to say, this alternative route can seem a bit daunting at first, and I’m not going to lie to you, it is pretty confusing if you don’t know your way around. So don’t worry about it, getting lost is part of the experience! But hey, just to be safe here is the map, and below are several places that you must drop by!

A List of Amazing Things to Do in the Plateau Mont-Royal

Le Plateau Mont-Royal: the restaurants are endless, the people are beautiful and art is everything. No wonder it’s the most densely populated borough in Canada. From indie theatre to unique restaurants, from lush green parks to Portuguese chicken, and from local artists to secret alley ways, we present to you… The Local Montreal Guide to Visiting The Plateau.

This article is specifically about The Plateau without including the Mile End. Check out our article on Montreal’s Mile End for more details. For even more inspiration, try these Super Exciting Things to Do in Montreal for Summer 2020.

17. Keep your eyes (and ears) out for cool stuff

Locals are always working to make their space reflect their values. When most of those locals are creative, energetic types, you’re pretty much guaranteed to stumble upon public art as you explore. Want a hint or two, treasure hunt style? Public pianos can be found scattered around, and there’s usually one on St-Laurent and Rachel at the Parc des Amériques. The international soft street art of yarn bombing also takes a seat in the Plateau: take a look for cozy trees and lamp posts. And.. psst! A little birdie told us that every so often there are pop up concert venues in the alley ways! So keep your eyes and ears open, because escaping other peoples’ creative outlets isn’t going to be possible in this magical place called The Plateau.

Have a quick look at our “Vlog” about Mile-End’s Best Restaurants and Things to do!

16. Lounge in Plateau Mont-Royal park paradise

Picnics, fountains, benches, trees, ponds, BBQ’s… Parks are truly where the magic happens in a Montreal summer. The Plateau Mont-Royal has some of the best around, and the people you’ll find in them are sometimes just as good. Of course, there’s Parc La Fontaine, perfect for a bike ride or picnic in the summer, and has a huge outdoor skating rink in the winter. Carré St-Louis,  at the bottom of Prince-Arthur, has one of the city’s most romantic fountains surrounded by benches. Parc Jeanne-Mance, opposite to Mount Royal is a classic for a reason. Receiving tam-tam echoes on Sundays, and hosting soft ball on most days, this large patch of grass has the perfect amount of action for a non-boring picnic spot.

15. Take the Mile End Montreal Food Tour

The Mile End is a community within the Plateau known for its high density of artists and recognized as a top foodie destination. Join an experienced local guide on the Mile End Food Tour and you’ll have the chance to discover famed institutions such as Saint Viateur Bagel, and try other artisanal foods. Not only that, the walking tour will take you through the area’s hidden corners and secret gems to learn all about the area’s art, history, architecture and culture, allowing you to get to know the neighbourhood from an insider’s perspective. Bily Kun

Having opened in 1998, Bily Kun is a timeless Czech bar with a decor that could be described as ‘tavern-chic’. If beer isn’t your refreshment of choice, in true eastern-Europe style, their cocktail list features absinthe and other Czech liquors. Try the absinthe-laced apple cocktail and let your work day fade away…

Their food menu also mirrors their French style: charcuterie, tartare and fine salads are offered, making this 5-7 an elegant experience all around.

They have an extensive list of cocktails, beer, and wine for a post-work refreshment set in a warm and homey locale.

327 Mont-Royal Ave E

Bonus: Take a Plateau & Mile-End Montreal Bike Tour

Montreal has become a magical place to visit by bike. The Plateau, Mile-End & Jean-Talon Market Montreal Bike Tour invites participants to explore the neighbourhoods vibrant scene by learning about the multicultural history of the area and digging into the hidden gems it has to offer. Go off the beaten path as you will ride quiet residential streets and green lanes and get a good dose of the local lifestyle. Check out these Fitz Montreal Bike Tours

13. Save some bucks and BYOW

If you’re not sure where to look for a BYOW restaurant, here’s a tip: most restaurants on either Prince-Arthur or Duluth are BYOW. These cobblestone streets have an old world feel and are fun to walk along, wine or no wine. If you’re going the wine route though, buy yourself a bottle at the SAQ and check out our guide to the best Montreal BYOW restaurants here.

12. Follow what local artists are up to

plateau montreal
Glen LeMesurier

Surely an area defined by art and culture must have its darlings. Metal sculptor Glen LeMesurier has been living in the area for over 30 years. These longtime roots translate into the industrial sculptures you can find all over the city, which he prefers to call poetry. Walk around and get entranced by his twisty metal endeavours, such as his project The Twilight Garden on St-Urbain and Van Horne.

Patsy Van Roost

There’s also Mile End resident, Patsy Van Roost. She’s known in the community as “The Mile End Fairy”. Her art seeks to break the walls of isolation within a community and bring people together. By wrapping trees with provocative phrases and including residents in her projects, Van Roost creates exactly the kind of magic that people thought only possible in fairytales.

11. Grab a bite, a drink, and catch a show all at once

Sala Rossa and Casa del Popolo are sister venues that combine food and music, each in their own very special way. Downstairs at Sala you’ll find a Spanish tapas restaurant, with the most amazing goat cheese balls fried in…honey (it’s actually worth the trip for those alone). Pair these with a nice sangria, and take yourself upstairs to their music venue. The small/medium concert venue welcomes popular indie acts and local events. The decor at Sala is also half the fun: a classic red curtain paired with white lights make the ambiance intimate, no matter how loud the singer sings. Casa del Popolo is like Sala’s little sister: a smaller venue with smaller acts and comforting sandwiches, but you’ll find some of the coolest people in the area hanging out there at all hours of the day.

10. Enjoy a delicious dinner in Plateau Mont-Royal

The Plateau boasts an impressive list of delicious restaurants. It can be hard to choose which one to go to on a particular night. Luckily, the Plateau’s got something no matter your mood, from classic French gastronomical fares to the best pho in town. Here are a few recommendations for where to go when dinning in this neighbourhood.

Restaurant L’Express

Having been established in 1980, Restaurant L’Express is now an iconic eatery in Montreal. Step into this Parisian-style bistro and you’ll find timeless, classic decor: checkered black and white tile floors, white tablecloths, burgundy wood, and a classic French menu. Think tartar with crispy yellow fries, fresh poached salmon, and shrimp risotto. Great for an intimate tete-a-tete, this bistro can tickle even the most discerning tastebuds.
3927 St Denis St, Montreal

Au Pied de Cochon

The chef at Au Pied de Cochon, Martin Picard, is changing the gastronomical game by throwing out many of its core characteristics. Picard’s French fares aren’t small in portion size, light or particularly healthy. The hearty Quebecois dishes are food for the soul while still being simple and rich. Picard’s creative uses of foie gras takes up a lot of the menu from a foie gras poutine to a foie gras tart. Set in an unpretentious and warm locale, this restaurant will entice you to come back more than one foie.
536 Avenue Duluth E

Yokato Yokabai Ramen

As far as small ramen restaurants go, the Plateau Mont-Royal has the best one. Most people probably don’t have time to boil animal bones for twelve hours, but Yakota Yokabai does. They specialize in serving up the thickest, fattiest, and tastiest broth in the city. Everything is made in house using only natural ingredients and you can pick the toppings for your own dish. Experience the city’s best ramen under the paper lanterns in this cozy Japanese joint.

9. Take part in a festival

plateau montreal

Keeping with true Montreal tradition, the Plateau Mont-Royal has multiple events and festivals throughout the year. In June you can catch the Montreal Fringe Fest, which takes over many venues in the area to host experimental local theatre, comedy, burlesque, and everything in between. It’s a must for those who enjoy both the fresh and bizarre. It’s also the centre of a myriad of music festivals: POP Montreal takes over most of the Plateau venues in September and invites local and international indie rock, electronic and other pioneering artists to perform. They also host Puces Pop, a bazar of artisanal goods from local artists, crafters and designers. 8. Explore the famed Plateau Mont-Royal nightlife

The Plateau Mont-Royal is the place to go after dark. There’s something for every taste: a night of extreme dancing, a cocktail tasting at a speakeasy, and catching a band at a cool bar/venue. Most places are located pretty close together, so if you’re not feeling one, just head to another! Here’s a list of exciting nighttime places to visit for a great time.

Sticking to the Main

Although its vibrance extends beyond its night owls, Plateau Mont-Royal nightlife is nothing to scoff at. For a dance party almost every night of the week, Blue Dog Motel and Le Belmont are spots for those who want to let loose on the dance floor. Bass drive Wednesdays at Le Belmont are a popular time to go for a high-energy dance party, with rum and coke pitchers at 20$. Blue Dog doubles as a barber shop during the day, but turns into an intimate dance club at night where many well known Montreal DJs started out. Checkout their websites to find out what events are happening.

L’Éscogriffe

To broaden your musical horizons, L’Éscogriffe is a bar/venue that hosts local bands and those just passing through Montreal. It’s a prime destination to see shows ranging from punk to indie rock to seasoned jazz ensembles. The stone walls and moody candlelight give it a cavernous feel, reinforcing the idea that you’re experiencing a cool underground show.

Darling

The new kid on the block (specifically Marie-Anne and St-Laurent) is Darling, a coffee shop, 5-7 meeting ground and charming bar. The locale evokes a vintage Los Angeles vibe with tufted leather couches, old fashioned lamps and plants placed just about everywhere. Head there for a morning meet-up over coffee, to bury yourself in your laptop, or for a night of very reasonably-priced refreshments, such as the ciders on tap.

Le Royal

Underneath the aforementioned wine bar, Rouge Gorge, is the speakeasy, Le Royal. The underground bar has dark features–smokey marble and bronze walls–giving it a feel of exclusivity. With a passion for mixology, Le Royal stirs up some creative cocktails and also boasts an impressive wine list like its sister bar upstairs. For an intimate, chic night out, Le Royal is the place.

Datcha

This quaint, corner bar/club is a great place for cocktails and dancing–what more could you ask for? Datcha has a Russian theme and minimalist design with an arch in the center and white brick walls. It’s an intimate venue with a mixed crowd, from students to business-chic. The music runs the gamut of musical genres, from electro to funk. If you’re anywhere near Laurier street and hoping for a European-style dance club, you’re in luck!

7. Get crafty (or tipsy) with Mtl brewed beers

plateau Montreal

The Plateau Mont-Royal is no exception to the current craft beer boom. Getting tipsy has never tasted so good! Le Reservoir on Duluth is your go-to microbrewery if you love rooftop terraces and refined dishes. Benelux, on the cusp of the McGill Ghetto, is known for their flavourful IPAs and wide range of successful brews. Dieu du Ciel (God of the Sky), is comparable to Montreal’s grandfather of gourmet beers, taking the award for Best Brewery year after year. Take yourself to Laurier street and bask in everything from fruity brews to dark coffee stouts such as the Péché Mortel (deathly sin). Oh and, don’t worry–they’ve got a patio too.

6. Get the lowdown on Le Petit Laurier

Photo: Urbanspoon
Photo: Urbanspoon

Le Petit Laurier is another little neighbourhood on the outskirts of the Plateau Mont-Royal, full of its own unique character. To find it, take yourself to Laurier Park, be inevitably impressed by it, and keep going East. A neighbourhood once populated mainly by blue collar workers, today Le Petit Laurier is a lovely mix of that and young vibrant artists. Byblos Le Petit Café is an authentic Iranian restaurant that transports you to its mysterious homeland by way of artsy woodsy decor and dishes. Go there for a brunch like you’ve never had it before, and be sure to ask the Mother of the house for her recommendation.

For a taste of the area’s inner workings, go to Cafe Les Entretiens, a restaurant that began as a joint dance school and sandwich spot. Today, it serves up some of the finest bistro food, doubling as a gallery for local artists. If that wasn’t enough to pull you out of bed and drag you there ecstatically, you just might do so when I tell you that they’ve mastered the art of brunch, specializing in breakfast potatoes.

5. Find the best Montreal poutine

Among the many Montreal food wars–best bagel, best smoked meat–the Plateau Montrealis home to Montreal’s poutine war. All the best poutineries are located within the area, making the Plateau Mont-Royal a haven for that late night greasy snack. Here are some poutine war competitors to indulge in so you can pick your own winner.

Patati Patata

This tiny, corner gourmet french fry shack is is unassuming, but is full at pretty much every hour of the day and night. The reason? Patati Patata‘s classic poutine: a perfect ratio of cheese curds, veggie gravy and dark, crispy fries. Upgrade to a “patatine,” which adds mushrooms, red peppers and onion to the best dish in town. Their window seats are perfect for people watching and make sure to wash down your Quebecois fare with their homemade iced tea.
4177 St Laurent Blvd

Chez Claudette

Chez Claudette is the definition of classic Quebec comfort food. They boast a menu of a few dozen different kinds of poutine, from spicy tomato sauce to meat galore, but, of course, you can never go wrong with opting for the classic three ingredients. Their fries are drenched in gravy (as it should be) and can be enjoyed in their little corner locale that’s very casual mom & pop. Among the Montreal poutine war candidates, Chez Claudette is a top contender.

La Banquise

Well, we had to mention La Banquise! This world famous poutinerie attracts a steady flow of people all 24 hours of the day, from late night partiers to daytime cravers. Their poutine is said to be, by many Montrealers, the best poutine in the city (which really means it’s the best poutine in the world). The bright decor is so simple you’ll barely notice it – you’ll be so focused on your delicious, gravy-soaked fries! What will catch your eye is the lineup of people at the door waiting to feast on one of Montreal’s most delicious delicacies. With over thirty different poutine variations, there’s always a reason to come back!
994 Rue Rachel E

Ma Poule Mouillée

Who knew a Portuguese rotisserie could master a Quebec classic? Ma Poule Mouillée‘s version of poutine features São Jorge cheese, charcoal-cooked chicken and chorizo sausages. They’re known for their chicken and tasty meat sandwiches, but their poutine is as delicious as any dish on the menu.

4. Experience indie theater in Plateau Mont-Royal

The Mont-Royal Plateau’s art factor doesn’t stop at its murals, DJ’s, or culinary feats. St-Laurent street houses two theatres in a three block radius.

Mainline Theatre

First up is Mainline Theatre. Charmingly bizarre space Mainline Theatre is known as “indie theatre’s home on The Main.” Host to an array of quirky acts, workshops, comedy, and film screenings, Mainline’s community-run vibe (and reality) makes it a true gem. And hey–what screams  “we’re in this together” more than a gender-neutral bathroom? Whether you’re in it for the show, or the politically correct bathroom, Mainline’s a spot you’ll want to check out.

Montreal Improv

Walk a few blocks up and you’ll find Montreal Improv, an improv acting school (Yes! This is your chance! Hollywood?!) that has improv shows in both English and French, as often as Thursday through Sunday. It’s a fun, laid back space, and an excellent option if you’re looking for an inexpensive way to have fun.

The Wiggle Room

The The Wiggle Room, also on St-Laurent, is your go to for all things burlesque, circus, and vaudeville. The folk there don’t take themselves too seriously, but absolutely do take their craft seriously. High quality performances with nothing but a passion for the fun, sexy, and bizarre, check out their calendar and make a reservation!

3. Catch a flick at these independent cinemas

Catching a movie in The Plateau Mont-Royal is a great way to boycott that super-sized, unreasonably priced, commercial movie theatre experience, and stay in proximity to all awesome things of Le Plateau. The area contains Cinema du Parc, and… our very own erotic film theatre, Cinema L’Amour!

Cinema du Parc

Cinema du Parc is an underground theatre (I mean, it’s literally under the ground), which makes it perfect for rainy days. There you’ll find foreign films, old films, indie films, and judiciously picked Hollywood movies. This little mall is a strange time machine to the 70’s, filled with cafeteria-like tables and an awesome Chinese restaurant. Catch an indie film and then pretend you’re inside one.

Cinéma L’Amour

And Cinema L’Amour? Well… who doesn’t like a good vintage erotic film? This iconic location in the Plateau Mont-Royal may have sticky seats, but it’s an experience you’re sure to remember. Oh and.. Pro tip: it’s free for couples on Mondays and Tuesdays! They also have merch, so you can proudly wear a Cinéma L’Amour t-shirt back home.

2. Connect with the area’s Portuguese roots

Look around and you’ll begin to notice: there’s an awful lot of Portuguese joints around. That’s because before becoming Montreal’s artistically diverse hot spot, The Plateau Mont-Royal used to be a primarily Portuguese neighbourhood. And thankfully for everyone, those roots remain. The first sign you’ll find is Parc du Portugal, located on St-Laurent and Marie-Anne, where Leonard Cohen used to hang out. The real reason people love the Portuguese allure to the hood however, is because of the chicken. Chez Doval is a popular sit-down option serving up its famous meat and seafood, and their weekend dinner service sometimes has a guitarist walking around, signing Portuguese songs!

Romados on Rachel is known for its large portions of mouthwatering chicken and fries. Utter the word “Romados” to any local and watch their eyes go wide, and their mouth salivate. It’s like a magic word to make any Montrealer chicken-crazy. You’ll have an important choice to make: spicy or not spicy, choose wisely (spicy).

1. Get coffee

Surely, a neighbourhood this full of artists and intellectuals requires coffee. Lots of coffee. If you’re on the Mountain or Mont-Royal Street, Café Plume is there to serve: the quaint spot is the perfect combination of friendly staff and a creativity inducing atmosphere. Le Lapin Pressé on Laurier has a cold brew to die for, and makes the most scrumptious cheesy sandwiches. The ever-so-popular Café Névé on Rachel is at your service for all things espresso, chewy cookies, and cozy turquoise decor. Pro tip: all these spots are perfect if you’re looking for somewhere to write The Next Great Montreal Novel. …And for one more, Dispatch, a sleek, modern and minimalist third wave cafe just opened up on St-Laurent street and Duluth–it’s instantly popular for a reason!

Mile Ex Montreal: 15 Reasons Why You Should Go…Now!

There’s something bittersweet about witnessing the development of an emerging neighbourhood. Too often, we’re only privy to our city’s secret spots once they’re out of the bag and crowded, or we want to hold on to them before they are. Mile Ex is currently in the midst of its transformation, and still has that twinge of excitement and mystery to it. Officially called the “Alexandra-Marconi” district, Mile Ex spans from Parc Avenue to Clark Street, between Jean-Talon and the train tracks. It’s a cozy, primarily residential neighbourhood that’s been built up from an austere industrial area by its dedicated residents, yet a new wave of development is beginning to obscure its humble roots.

Take a look at the list below to find out why you should go be part of the buzz, or check out some more Exciting Things to Do all over town.

1. Bar Alexandraplatz

Nestled between a semi-vacant parking lot and one of Mile Ex’s emblematic industrial buildings, Bar Alexandraplatz is like a backyard party you can show up to without invitation, every single (summer) day. With its garage door entrance, cash only policy, lack of a phone number, and the fact that it opens only for what their website calls the “beautiful season,” the homegrown vibe at Alexandraplatz is as uncomplicated as getting 5 à 7 drinks and hanging out with your buddies should be. Plus, a few times a month, food trucks gather around the Berlin-style beer garden, turning the energy from a backyard, to a full-scale block party!

2. Manitoba

A restaurant that describes itself as serving food that is like “wood, rock, and wind,” Manitoba is a sort of oasis: a culinary return to nature that sits in stark contrast to the concrete dwellings that surround it. Yet, the concept of Manitoba is an ode to simplicity, a return to basics that fits right in with the changing culture of the neighbourhood. Serving all fresh, local ingredients and compelling dishes you won’t find anywhere else, this spot is becoming an increasingly popular attraction of Mile Ex, slowly chipping away at its “industrial only” status.

3. Parc des Gorilles

Speaking of returning to nature, Parc des Gorilles is a DIY green space that’s soon to bring new life to the neighbourhood. The project has been in the works for several years thanks to a strong community incentive to convert a historic railway route into a green, neighbourhood-friendly space. After a series of disputes between residents, the Borough, and the land’s previous owners, a plan for the park finally has been approved this spring. With the tech industry starting to move into the area, its more important now than ever for residents of the formerly industrial neighbourhood to have a place to call their own. Keep an eye out for movement on the lot as the summer progresses, and maybe lend a hand, too, as the park will be both restored and managed by and for community members.

4. 180g

Following an unexpected theme you may soon begin to pick up on in these recommendations: 180g is a unique combination of two distinct operations, tucked away in an industrial loading bay. Both a cafe and record store, the vibe at 180g is cozy and cool. Good music is always spinning on their record player making you feel warm and welcome as you lunch on delicious yet affordable eats or just sip your coffee. Make sure to also spend some time digging through their expertly curated record selection, you’re sure to find some rare gems, underground electronic beats, or vintage hip-hop records, depending on what you’re seeking.

5. Never Apart

As can be expected from an up-and-coming Montreal neighbourhood, Mile Ex has become a hub for activism and the arts. One of the drivers of this movement is Never Apart, a non-profit organization that stands for “Change Through Spirit & Culture.” Driven by creativity and a desire to educate the public on equality, the environment and conscious living, they forge all forms of artistic collaboration. The centre is an inclusive space that brings together community members through social gatherings, music, art exhibitions, panel discussions, workshops, special events, and more. These moments of unity and are the perfect opportunity to enact positive change for the future, and get inspired by people’s passion and originality along the way.

6. Bar Le Ritz PDB

PDB stands for “Punks Don’t Bend” but if Bar Le Ritz is any example, they sure do dance. There’s an exciting event going on at the queer-friendly and wheelchair accessible venue on almost any given night. Between live musical acts, DJs, and even drag performers, the lineup is varied and exciting. You can hear experimental Montreal-grown sounds one night and then return and dance to global pop anthems the next. If you’re looking to see how Mile Ex’s community-driven ethos translates to the nightlife, this is truly the place to do it.

7. Café Guerrero

Located inside the Esplanade Loft Project building, a structure’s that’s iconic to the neighbourhood, is Cafe Guerrero. The mission of this humble spot is simple: delicious, affordable, healthy food for everyone. The owner and chef refers to Guerrero as “the shop,” implying that each sandwich you’ll eat here is a labour of love. In fact, the menu itself changes daily, a sure sign of a passionate chef.

8. Dépanneur Le Pick-Up

Perhaps the most famous “dépanneur” in the city, Le Pick-Up mirrors the intimacy of simply stepping in to your neighbour’s private hangout, but you’ll find yourself in a half restaurant, half convenience store instead. The combination may sound strange, but thats’s exactly what gives Le Pick-up its character. The “couple of tables strewn around a store” vibe means you’ll likely end up at the diner-style bar, wedged between a zine stand, some mismatched dishes, and other hungry customers… but what keeps people coming back is, of course, the delicious food. Their halloumi sandwich is internet famous, their pulled pork feeds as many artists as mechanics, and with the choice of cheddar or Kraft for your cheeseburger, these folks respect the different moods of the hungry heart.

9. Harricana

Beer lovers rejoice: you can rely on wildly popular Harricana to fill all of the area’s mandatory craft beer needs. The microbrewery has become a cornerstone of the neighbourhood since it opened in 2015, bringing together people of all ages day in and day out with its affordable prices and warm, communal energy. Their unique selection of beers, rotating guest tap, and reliably enjoyable food menu also mean that its been a key player in bringing people from other parts of the city to the area. Plus, the kitchen’s open until 2 am, too, so let the good times keep on rolling!

10. Emporium

Like any good neighbourhood, the Barber Shop Revival is alive and well in Mile Ex. With at least five different types of wood as part of its decor, and shelves showcasing the finest products in pretty vintage packages, Emporium exudes an old-timey, cozy basement vibe. It’s one of the chief leaders in the neighbourhood’s laid back aesthetic. Their “Lineup – Espresso” combo is a walk-in only experience that will leave you believing you truly are in your friend’s kitschy basement shop: a quick neck shave and espresso are just enough for your barber to welcome you and send you off with an uplifting caffeine buzz.

11. Dinette Triple Crown

Located at Clark and St-Zotique, this popular joint is right on the edge of the Mile Ex border and its visibility to the “outside world” acts as an invitation to this budding neighbourhood. If the cozy, homegrown, intimate theme of Mile Ex venues wasn’t obvious yet, Dinette Triple Crown surely makes it so. The Southern food restaurant specializes in fried chicken, mac & cheese, and other comforting eats. The real treat, though, are their picnic baskets. They’ll pack your meal in one to eat across the street in Little Italy Park. You can even take some of their products home in a mason jar, pushing the boundaries of what a restaurant can be even further.

12. Eastern Bloc

Another industrial space dedicated to showcasing creativity, Eastern Bloc promotes digital art. Through exhibits, vernissages, performances, and meetings they explore the boundaries and intersections of art, science and technology. Plus, with internationally renowned artists and budding local talent both on the roster, the programming is rich and eclectic through this exchange. Come check out the gallery as they continue to explore modes of production, facilitate audience participation and support emerging talent – you’ll find both moments for quiet reflection or sensorially charged dance parties, depending on the day.

13. Notre Dame des Quilles

You’ll find this other local nightlife favourite at Beaubien and St-Dominique just steps outside the heart of Mile Ex. The cleverly named bar revives the idea of drinking and bowling, and with its Prohibition era aesthetic, dance parties, DJ events and karaoke nights, you might find yourself grooving on the lanes when the time comes. Plus, its usual hipster crowd (a staple at most Mile Ex venues), LGBTQ events, affordable drinks and laid-back decor mean the venue is an inviting space for anyone. And finally, one last tip: there’s pizza in the back!

15. Le Mile-Ex Restaurant

Le Mile-Ex is the small, cozy, fine food eatery that may just be the reason behind the neighbourhood’s monicker. The restaurant has become a popular spot for food-fanatics from not only Montreal, but from all over. (A New York Times review never hurts.) The joint is something of an ode to the modernization of street food, offering brioche hot dogs, seafood mac and cheese, and a pop up ice cream shop in the summer. Reflecting the growing neighbourhood, you can enjoy these elevated dishes while seated under hanging bare lightbulbs at communal tables, all characteristic of Mile Ex’s unique energy.

A List of the Best Coffee in Montreal

My favorite coffee spot? You’ve probably never heard of it. This list of best coffee in Montreal is in no particular order, because it was too hard to deduce a fair sequence without being shunned by the Coffee Gods.

14. Café Brooklyn

71 Rue Saint Viateur Est

375400_220318024769704_853802558_n

Fresh food, good coffee, reasonable prices and a friendly ambiance. This cafe started off as a 20th century modern furniture store, but rapidly morphed into a coffee shop. While you’re there, try the coffee cake (it is baked by the owner’s aunt every day)!

13. Le Cagibi

5490 Boulevard Saint-Laurent

best coffee in montreal

This place is as cool as it gets: a vegetarian coffee shop that doubles as a concert venue. Not only can you savour excellent coffee here, but you can watch the staff prep your burritos, admire the quirky decor, and experience an authentic Montreal apartment feel as you walk on the creaky floorboards. With mismatched chairs, tables, and dishes, the veritable bohemian atmosphere is sure to imbue you and your coffee during your stay. Oh and, they don’t charge extra for soy.

12. Cafe Myriade

1432 Rue Mackay
1000 Sainte Catherine Street West
4627 Saint-Denis Street

Best coffee in Montreal

This ever-popular coffee destination (that’s often the sustenance of Concordia students) is more than a pretty cafe. Myriade only works with quality-focused roasters–mainly from 49th Parallel Roasters in Vancouver, BC–but they also feature guest roasts from across North America and Europe. Their coffee tastes even better because it’s guilt-free: they pay the farmers above the standard Fair-Trade prices. With their seasonal menu, you’ll have a chance to taste a myriad of flavours at Myriade.

11. Club Social

180 St. Viateur Ouest Montreal

Club sociale Best Coffee Shops in Montreal Mile End

Continuing up the Mile-End’s St-Viateur, you’ll eventually encounter Olympico’s rival, Club Social. This coffee shop’s terrace makes for one of the best (but well known) summer hangout spots. Trees surround it, locals wave to each other, and (coffee) love is in the air. Ordering from here makes you feel like you’re instantly part of the neighbourhood thanks to the staff’s friendliness. Make sure you order a latte, they’re 2 bucks!

10. Pikolo Espresso Bar

3418b Park Ave

best coffee in montreal

Once Marie-Eve Laroche discovered Australia’s coffee culture, she decided to bring a taste of it back to Montreal. Pikolo Espresso Bar says it all in the name: it’s a small space that serves espresso-based drinks. Laroche works with Canadian roasters Phil & Sebastian and Microtorrefacteur Saint-Henri to accentuate the flavour of each unique coffee.

9. Café Résonance

5175 Avenue du Parc

best coffee in montreal

This vegan jazz-cafe is huge, very low key, and has a great ambiance! They often host reading and music events. And just in case coffee actually does keep you up at night, they’ll keep you company: open hours go until midnight every day of the week.

8. Dispatch

best coffee in montreal

Dispatch was started by Chrissy Durcak who began by serving the coffee out of a truck. Her philosophy was to spend time cultivating a relationship with the farmers they get their coffee from. Having now removed the training wheels, Dispatch serves up a tasty cup of coffee in three different locations around Montreal. The coffee shops’ ultra-minimalist decor doesn’t reflect their coffee–those beans are packed with flavour–because Dispatch is riding the third wave of coffee hard.

267 Rue Saint Zotique O
3480 University St

7. Cafe Odessa

65 rue Beaubien East

Best coffee in motnreal

From the owners of Le Vieux Vélo popular brunch eatery in Rosemont comes Odessa, an industrial-style cafe with a nautical theme based the eponymous port city in the Ukraine. This third wave coffee shop gets their beans from Pilot Coffee Roasters who try and directly source every bean roasted. Baristas are particularly friendly here and easy to have a little chat with as you sip on your drink of choice.

6. Arts Café

201 Avenue Fairmount Ouest

10330263_639351526141530_6620909786802541228_n

The service here is amazing: you are always greeted with a smile! They have generous portions, quality coffee, rustic decor and oh- did I mention the great service?

5. Olympico

124 Rue St-Viateur Ouest

Olympico Best Coffee Shops in Montreal Mile End

They have legendary coffee; it’s fantastic and you will not be disappointed. It can get very crowded though- so maybe you shouldn’t come here… It’s not even that great. (To many people know about the goodness that this place can offer!!!)

4. Café Falco

5605 Avenue de Gaspé

Best coffee shops in Montreal

The layers of flavour to be found in Falco’s various coffees are gastronomical. The place has an industrial feeling to it but has a great ambiance and vibe. They offer a variety of food that have a Japanese twist to them. Come here for lunch!

3. Melinas Phyllo Bar

5733 du Parc

Best coffee in Montreal

1. MELK Bar à Café

1206 Stanley St

Next time you’re in Parc Lafontaine having a picnic, walk over to your nearest neighbouring picnic and offer a food swap. You know, my grapes for your… kiss?
