Everywhere in Montreal: Bixi Bike Share

The Bixi (Bicycle + Taxi) public bike system is a local success story. It was launched in 2009, the first of its kind in North America. Bixi is operated by the City of Montreal and has now grown to offer over 7,500 bikes and 600 stations spread around the city.

Their bikes and docking systems are actually used in many cities around the world including New York, London, and Toronto.

Bixi is a perfect way of getting from point A to point B. Think about it as replacing a short trip when you would normally walk, take transit, or ride in a taxi/ride hailing vehicle. It will often be faster and and much less expensive than using a car service.

Bixi’s, like most micromobility share systems, are not destined for any leisure bike expeditions. The bikes are slightly heavy, have limited gearing, and have a very narrow front rack to hold a bag or other cargo.

The bikes also must be returned to any dock within 30 minutes (45 minutes with a monthly or annual pass), or you will pay overage charges which can add up very quickly.

Local tip: Do not try to ride a Bixi to the top of Mont-Royal.  Due to the heavy weight of the bikes, the ride up will be difficult, and there are no docks in order to check-your bike back in. Rent a regular bike instead.

Nevertheless, if you need a hassle free mode of transport to get you where you want to go, Bixi is optimal. The stations are plentiful – in the core of the city you will find a station every 2 or 3 blocks.  We recommend to download the app to see where the nearest one is to you. You can also pay by credit card directly at the docking stations.

Bixi has even added some e-bikes to their fleet.  Keep an eye out for them – they are painted in blue!

Prices:

$1.25 to unlock the bixi

0,15 cents per minute on a normal bike

0,30 cents per minute on a electric bike

*All electric Bixis are subject to an additional $1 fee per trip.

*Make sure to wear a helmet if you plan to take an electric bixi. Fines for not wearing a helmet on an electric bike are between 60$-100$.

Nowhere in Montreal: Electric Scooters

Jump, now owned by Uber, is the first privately operated bike share company to operate across Montreal. Both Lime and Bird electric scooters operated under a pilot program in Montreal in 2019, however the city has banned their use in 2020 until they can find a solution to better regulate the scooters that were often left in undesirable places, such as blocking sidewalks.

This is a common issue that many cities have struggled with soon after e-scooters launched in their respective cities. Due to the overwhelming demand and saturation of e-scooter systems in the United States and in Europe, we are sure they will be back on Montreal streets soon.

Stay tuned as more micromobility systems (bike or scooter share) will launch in Montreal in the near future.

Before you head out: Cycling Tips and Rules of the Road in Montreal

Montreal’s bike culture is flourishing. In the warmer months there are often bike traffic jams on the main cycling routes heading Downtown. In winter, more and more cyclists are braving the cold and investing in gear to keep riding all year-round.

In general, Montreal is a wonderful place to ride.  Proper bike paths are plentiful, and most drivers quite respectful of cyclists. The police are usually lassez-faire, but do sometimes fine riders for breaking the rules.

Whether you are a fair-weather cyclist or a year-round warrior, there are some common unwritten rules and actual laws to observe while riding in Montreal.

The Laws

  1. No headphones allowed. Not even just one of the earbuds. The police are known to ticket for this. Just bring a bluetooth speaker and attach it to your bike instead. Party time!
  2. Use lights at night. If you will be riding at all in the dark, you are obliged by law to have a front white light and a rear red light. At Fitz we offer lights to our customers included in the rental.  If you rent from another shop, make sure to ask for some.
  3. Helmets are recommended but not obligatory in Quebec. Though we strongly recommend helmets for all our rentals and tours, the choice is up to you. Westmount, a neighbourhood adjacent to Downtown does however oblige all riders to wear helmets.  This is only one pocket of the city that you may pass through, but keep it in mind.
  4. Beers & Bikes. They just go together so well.  After a long ride a local craft beer sure is refreshing. But don’t over do it.  The same laws that apply to driving a car, also apply to cycling. This means having 1 or 2 beers or glasses of wine with your lunch of dinner is ok, but don’t go partying all night and ride around intoxicated. You could receive a big fine.

* Local tip.  It is legal to drink alcohol in Montreal’s city parks, but you must have some accompanying food to go along with it. Sharing a bottle of wine over a plentiful picnic with friends is ok, but finishing off a 6-pack with a bag of chips is not. We call it the ‘one beer one sandwich rule.’

Etiquette

  1. Stay on your side. Montreal has many bi-directional bike paths. Stay on your side of the path unless you need to pass.  If you are riding in a group, just make sure not to hog the whole lane and instead ride single-file.
  2. Don’t ride on the sidewalks. If you do, you will probably be yelled at. If you need to lock up your bike at a bike rack on the sidewalk, just approach it slowly or walk your bike.
  3. Stop at Red lights, stop or roll slowly at Stop signs. Montreal is known as a city of jaywalkers, but leave that to the pedestrians. While riding do not run a red light. Montreal is working on a changing to the ‘Idaho Stop’ rule to allow cyclists to roll through stop signs on quieter streets when the intersection is clear.  However, until the new ‘Idaho Stop’ is implemented just use your best judgement or stop.
  4. Give pedestrians the right of way. Just as cyclists expect car drivers to give them priority, cyclists should do the same for pedestrians. If a pedestrian is walking in the bike lane, a ring of the bell or a whistle should do. If you find yourself riding somewhere that bikes shouldn’t be (such as a busy festival area), don’t ring your bell at pedestrians since you are the one in the wrong!

So where should you rent your bike? It all depends what is most important to you: Location, price or style.

We hope this guide helped you make the right choice and hope to see you on our bike paths soon!

Where to eat for the best poutine in Montreal… and where not to

Montreal poutine! No visit to Montreal is complete without sampling this signature French-Canadian dish. Made with french fries, gravy and squeaky cheese curds – yes, squeaky cheese is a tell-tale sign of a good poutine – this dish is hearty, filling, and best enjoyed after a long night of dancing.

As with anything that people hold dear to their hearts, there’s much debate about where you can find the best poutine. One thing every Quebecer will tell you, though, is that it’s definitely not in Ontario. The exact origin of the dish is clouded in controversy, too. While we can’t travel back in time to see the first time one person in rural Quebec had the bright idea of combining its three key ingredients, we can travel around Montreal and pick out which restaurants serve the best versions of this iconic dish.

1. Patati Patata

One of three restaurants located on Rue Rachel, Montreal’s “poutine strip,” Patati Patata is a bustling and colourful counter right at the intersection with Saint Laurent Boulevard, another iconic city street. Inside, you’ll find that seating is quite limited, but somehow everyone always seems to be in good spirits. Maybe, it’s because they know they’re getting Montreal’s best poutine. With crispy fries, squeaky cheese and flavourful gravy, together with the ambiance it’s Montreal culture, perfected. Patati Patata also has amazing burgers, beer, a breakfast menu and vegetarian poutine, all of which is incredibly affordable. If there’s one place you go for the true Montreal poutine experience, this is it!

4177 Saint Laurent Blvd

2. Ma Poule Mouillée

Rue Rachel runs through the Plateau, a Montreal neighbourhood highly influenced by Portuguese culture, so naturally the next stop on this poutine crawl is Portuguese restaurant Ma Poule Mouillée. They’ve put their own twist on the local classic, topping their poutine with São Jorge cheese, their famous grilled chicken and even chorizo, if you wish. The result is a mouthwatering and flavourful plate that’s rich yet crispy, spicy, smoky, and seasoned to perfection with their special Portuguese sauce. The portions are incredibly generous, so bring friends and come hungry! Though there may be a lineup at this popular joint, it’s not as long as the next place…

3. La Banquise

La Banquise has garnered quite the reputation, making its name practically synonymous with Montreal poutine. They truly take the humble dish to the next level, in every way possible. Open 24 hours a day, every day of the week, they never stop serving their 30 different poutine varieties. (And poutine isn’t even the only thing on the menu!) With so much choice, you can get a large steaming plate of fries and squeaky curds topped with just about anything you can imagine, making it an exciting adventure just to pick your order. Both locals and visitors alike just can’t seem to get enough! Though wait times can get long at peak hours, if you get there early, you should have no trouble getting seated quickly.

4. Chez Tousignant

Moving past this stretch of Rachel, Chez Tousignant is, in spirit, a classic Quebecois “casse-croûte,” or snack bar, fully furnished with retro diner decor. What they serve, however, is not just any old fast food. The spot is chef-driven and everything on the menu is made from scratch. What they’re doing is not reinventing the wheel, but making the best version possible of everyone’s favourite comfort foods, and it’s a difference you can taste. Their poutine is impeccable without the frills, and even among other indulgent options, it’s a stand-out. This classic casse-croûte is the perfect way to connect with Quebec’s true heritage and sample an authentic poutine that’s undeniably delicious!

5. Le Gras Dur

Photo credit: Le Gras Dur on Facebook

From the Das Food Truck family, you can now visit Le Gras Dur in a brick and mortar location that won’t drive away. Bringing the joy of greasy street food to downtown, the restaurant is located in La Central, a one-of-a-kind food hall that brings together 25 of Montreal’s top restauranteurs into one gourmet destination. But, we’re here to talk about the poutine. They make several award-winning versions of this saucy favourite with toppings inspired by street foods such as schnitzel and cheese burgers. While this might sound like it would send vegans packing, thanks to clever modifications such as eggplant schnitzel, indulging in their fresh and flavourful dishes is for everyone!

6. Broue Pub Brouhaha

While you might come here for the poutine, you’ll want to stay for their selection of locally brewed craft beers and the charming neighbourhood pub atmosphere. Then, you’ll want to come back again for the poutine. They have several different selections on their menu of refined pub foods, but one is a real show stopper. The “Poutiflette” comes with a caramelized onions, leeks and bacon, all topped with a creamy duck-based gravy. This mouthwatering combination of flavours is unique to the Montreal poutine scene, and is well worth a trip up to Rosemont, away from the crowds and the tourists. The poutine at Broue Pub Brouhaha is true local hidden gem.

7. Au Pied de Cochon

Au Pied de Cochon is Quebecois fare at its finest, and its a well-known establishment in the Montreal culinary scene. As a whole, the restaurant’s menu is sophisticated and meaty, rich and flavourful – and the poutine is no exception. Topped with foie gras, this is one of the pricier options on this list, but you definitely get what you pay for. The melt-in-your-mouth decadence of the foie gras is set off by the squeaky curds and its all married by a flavourful gravy for one sumptuous dish that’s unlike any poutine you’ve probably had before. Need I say more? If you’re looking for an indulgent French-Canadian experience start planning soon, as you will need to make a reservation.

8. Gibeau Orange Julep

gibeau orange julep

The Orange Julep feels like an ode to an earlier era of drive-ins and roadside attractions, catching the eye of weary drivers after hours on the road. While it is easiest to get there by car, it is well within the city and also accessible by metro, located mere minutes away from Namur metro station. This unique orange sphere of a restaurant is named for its signature orange drink, just don’t ask what’s in it! That’s top secret. While a visit here is worth the experience alone, the poutine is comforting and nostalgic, adding a perfect touch of flavour to this unique Montreal attraction.

7700 Boulevard Décarie

10. Bonus tip: Skip Montreal poutine

This restaurant on Rue Saint Paul might be aptly named, but the poutine there is not the best. The quality of the dish is not up to locals’ tastes, so travel outside of Old Montreal to discover a more authentic side of the city!

Their mission is to preserve the history and culture behind old monuments and landmarks, making this one of the most informative Montreal tours. Take a look at their programming for an overview of their tours.

Round Table Tours

Montreal’s food scene can seem overwhelming when you take into account the sheer number of restaurants and the diversity of cultures that specialize in different kinds of cuisines. Round Table Tours can help guide you through the fog and pinpoint what’s important to taste. The tour explores what they call ‘culinary nostalgia’ which looks at what the variety of communities have brought to the Montreal food scene. The company seeks to uncover the ‘behind the scenes’ of the culinary world by looking at the best chefs, entrepreneurs and through tasting Montreal’s most delicious food.

Kaleidoscope Tours

Hidden back Alleys in Montreal, the underground of Montreal, the Chinese District, Little Italy, the Red Light District of Montreal… These are only a few Montreal tours offered by the Kaleidoscope Montreal Walking Tour company.   With such a wide selection, this is a great company to choose if you’re looking to learn about a specific aspect of Montreal. Take a look at their list of tours here. Their guides are impressively knowledgeable, and are trained by Ivan Drouin, Kaleidoscope’s founder. His guides are fantastic and we must applaud them for the exceptionally high quality of their tours. Strongly recommended!

The Museum of Jewish Montreal and Wandering Chew’s ‘Beyond the Bagel’

Beyond the Bagel explores and celebrates the important history of Jewish communities and food in Montreal’s Mile End and Plateau. The tour covers the famous feud between St. Viateur and Fairmount bagels who both compete to gain the title of Montreal’s best bagel. The walk covers Wilensky’s, a Jewish deli that’s known for its trademarked, top secret, Wilensky Special. Of course, the tour stops by Schwartz’s’ deli which houses the best smoked meat in town (and possibly the world). In addition to these staples, the tour explores some off the beaten path routes to guide you through lesser-known aspects of the Jewish community’s history. For instance, what does a homemade pickle have to do with an alley on St-Urbain street? You can find this out and more on the Beyond the Bagel tour Montreal walking tour.

There are also winter tours, one of which brings you to the top of Mount Royal. This tour takes you through forested paths and to some of Montreal’s most breathtaking views. Weather permitting, snowshoeing, ice-skating and tubing are also offered on this tour. If you’re looking for a little history and adventure, Fitz & Follwell tours are right for you!

11+ Hotel Ideas for Throwing the Best Montreal Bachelor Party

A Montreal bachelor party can be hard to plan. Someone’s probably counting on you to give them the best weekend of their lives. That’s a lot of pressure! Especially when you’re dealing with a city you don’t know very well. But don’t panic! We’ll be your personal guides for a few minutes and tell you what we know. Take a look at our pick of hotels and surrounding hot spots to help you and your bachelor party be something you’ll never forget.

–> For Montreal’s best bars, strip clubs and clubs, check out our local guide “Montreal Bachelor Party: 14 Nighttime Ideas [Full Guide]”

Hotel 10

Montreal bachelor party itinerary

Hotel 10 is perfectly located. Right at the meeting point of the Plateau Mont-Royal and downtown, this hotel is linked to a huge bar and terrace where big parties are a frequent thing. The Plateau Mont-Royal is where most local nightlife enthusiasts live, and where you will find the tons of interesting cafés, restaurants, bars, venues, etc… Hotel 10 is also a 2 minute walk from the buzzing nightlife of St-Laurent Boulevard and many 24h eateries.

If you decide to stay at this hotel, here are few local Montreal Bachelor tips:

For an afternoon activity your group is more than welcome to join our Montreal Bachelor Party Afternoon Craft Beer Tour which starts very close to your hotel (approx. 7 minutes walk).

Start your Montreal bachelor party off with an oyster and a vodka shot at le Majestic Restaurant & Bar.  Read our review to find out why you shouldn’t miss out on this joint. In this area, Kama Sutra is the nearest strip club… we recommend it. They claim to host the most beautiful women, and the India-inspired venue is not to be missed. For your mandatory hangover brunch, go to La Fabrique on St-Denis street… scrumptious eggs and potatoes, Montreal style.

Old Montreal District (and the International District)

The Montreal W Hotel

Set in the International District, the W Montreal Hotel is a classy, high end hotel. If that’s the kind of bachelor party you’re planning, the W Montreal Hotel is an excellent choice. It’s popular for its bar and sophisticated lounge, where you’re sure to meet people from all over and even locals!

Hotel Place d’Armes

bachelor party itinerary montreal hotel place darme

Located in the heart of the Old Town, the Place d’Armes Hotel offers one of the nicest views from it’s terrace, right onto the water. With its gorgeous rooms and its perfect balance of festive and classy atmosphere, this hotel covers all bases.

Intercontinental Hotel

Rated 5 stars, this is our top pick for the luxurious bachelor. The Intercontinental Montreal Hotel has a great Absinthe Bar, spa amenities, and also the best Bell Men. These guys are well connected, and can get you anything (if you know what I mean).

If you decide to stay in the Old Montreal district, here are few local Montreal Bachelor party tips:

One of Montreal’s best Clubs is the Velvet Speakeasy. This joint has huge parties every week-end. This is our number one club suggestion! A quick look at their Facebook page will tell you why. For a great brunch after a big night of party, consider Olive and Gourmando. They’ve got chicken sandwiches that are to die for on fresh bread. This spot is well known in town as one of the best. For a casual 5 à 7 or a bar to start your night (that’s what we call “happy hour” here), consider the Assommoir and Confessional bar.

Quartier des Spectacles (The Festival Area)

Hyatt Regency Hotel

If you’re planning to travel to Montreal during its famous summer festival season, between June and July, the Hyatt Montreal Hotel is your top pick. Right at the heart of the action, you’ll be steps away from outdoor activities, venues, and concerts. Some highlights are: The Montreal International Jazz Festival and the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival. Festivals are the perfect way to take your Montreal bachelor party to the next level.

What to do in the Quartier des Spectacles District:

Furco is an industrial-chic bar in the heart of downtown. They have a long list of wine, creative cocktails, beer, and an assortment of whiskey. The SAT is always hosting a myriad of cool events and dance parties and has an awesome terrace and great food. For coffee, you absolutely must go to the Café Parvis. They also serve pastries and pizza in a charming atmosphere. You’ll be really close to McGill campus, a beautiful area filled with history and benches, perfect for a bachelor party recharge: a breath of fresh air, and maybe absorb some knowledge by osmosis. Our Montreal Brewpub Craft Beer tour (perfect for bachelors) finishes not far from the Place des Festivals and the Hyatt Hotel.

Downtown Montreal (Less Expensive Hotels)

The Downtown district hotels are perfect for downtown activity proximity, of course. You can go watch a hockey game, a show at the Bell Centre, have a drink at a terrace on Crescent street, organize a club crawl or go to a few strip clubs. The possibilities are endless, and you’re likely cross a few bachelor parties on your path and give each other high fives. Consider the Tavern Square Dominion which is one of the nicest bar Montreal has to offer. The bar looks like an old-fashion tavern and is always bustling.  All this makes the Tavern a true historic and stylish experience. Also, Chez Paré is one of Montreal’s most famous strip club and it should be on your to do list.

 Holiday Inn

Let’s face it: bachelor parties ‘aint cheap. One way to cut costs is to save your budget for the booze and clubs, and stay at one of the more generic hotels. And you know what? According to some TripAdvisor reviews, that might just be the best way to go. Here is a review from Tripadvisorthat gives some interesting insight into The Holiday Inn. This review was posted in March 2014.

Here are the steps we have taken in each facet of our operations.

  • Social distancing will be implemented throughout the tour, respecting as much as possible the 6-foot distance rule between each parties.
  • Hand sanitizer will be provided before and after each food stop, and available from your tour guide throughout the tour.
  • Tables and chairs will be sanitized prior to our arrival at each sit-down restaurant.
  • All food servings will be individually packaged/served, and guides must sanitize their hands before distributing tastings.
  • Tour capacity has been reduced by half, with a limit on the amount of parties booked within each tour as well.

Protocols for our tour guides

  • Tour guides are required to wear a mask as much as possible throughout the tour
  • Tour guides must stand more than 6 feet away if they require to remove the mask during presentations
  • Tour guides will be sanitizing and washing their hands consistently throughout the tour, especially before and after food stops.

Profitez de votre bed in!

8 September 2017 by

September in Montreal: back to school reunions, wool socks, layered outfits, and… POP Montreal. There’s that one special week we all look forward to, where the cold weather blues are eased by the promise of back-to-back shows around the city. New talent and old, at affordable prices, invade pretty much all Plateau/Mile End venues for a few days– a music lover’s bliss. This year, for their Sweet 16, POP seems to have nostalgia as their theme, bringing us a collection of heart throbs from the 2000’s and up. As always we’ll be graced with tons of local acts, and some of the most buzzworthy, too. Here are 10 shows to get you on your bike and pedalling from show to show next week.

10. PETRA GLYNT

popmontreal

Photo: Joseph Fuda

Originally from Toronto, Montreal’s own Petra Glynt takes the stage alongside Bernadino Femminielli and others or POP’s #SWEET16. Her sound is of that haunting variety, where tribal sounds from down under meet her feisty witchy vocals. The result? A futuristic trance-inducing beat where Petra is our enchantress, our guide, our psychedelic musical empress in the sky. And us? Well, we’re all too eager and following, entranced by her visceral beats. Join us and get under her spell on September 13, 10:30pm at Piccolo Little Burgundy.

9. THINK ABOUT LIFE – FREE!!

popmontreal

Remember Think About Life? Their playful take-nothing-seriously-and-make-everything-a-party electronic indie vibe came to us in the late 00’s, a time where we were all still confused that Y2K hadn’t taken us under. At this time where the pressure to start a new millenium off right was still on the to-do list, Think About Life lyrics like I decided to kiss you but it felt like a downer calmed us down, reminding us that life is nonsense anyway. Surprise, 10 years later we still need that poppy yet absurd soundrack to our life. September 16 at 11pm, Think About Life pairs up with Strange Froots and Eboni at Piccolo Little Burgundy. RSVP here.

8. MOUNT EERIE

Story-telling folk music for the realists, the romantics, the lovers of exquisite lyrics, but definitely not for the faint of heart. Mount Eerie, aka Phil Elverum has an introspective clarity of a rare calibre, and the vocals to match. His music tells the story of the passing of his late wife with a candor and honesty that hits that universal human nerve, making the ineffable heard and the excruciating somehow…irresistible. Thus is the magic of great music. Join him in what’s sure to be a raw, cathartic human experience on September 17th 8pm at Ukrainian Federation : Salle Exclaim!.

7. AUSTRA

popmontreal

Cue the nostalgia hazy screen effect. 2011: the days of dark wave synthy goodness and brown Instagram icons. The days where we (okay, I) played Feel It Break on a loop for 8 hours while writing undergrad papers. Thanks Austra, you got us (me?) through a real rough patch there. Gratuitous personal annecdotes aside, Austra made that dark synth wave accessible with Katie Stelmanis’ frightening yet sweet vocals and catchy catchy beat in a way that few could do back then. I mean, Zola Jesus is a bit heavy to play 8 hours straight or slap on the family roadtrip playlist. But Lose It? Everyone liked Lose It. The good news is, this kind of synthy magic doesn’t just go away. Austra’s still going strong, and this year we get to see them at none other than the Rialto. Join us on September 14 10pm at Rialto Theatre: Salle St-Ambroise.

6. DEAD OBIES

It’s no secret that the Dead Obies are Montreal’s bilingual hip hop darlings du jour. In contrast with the more… throwback-esque acts at POP this year, Dead Obies bring that current buzz to Metropolis on September 14. These guys are extra fun because they share the mic, taking turns in the spotlight– a dynamic that definitely pays off on stage. The party of six has not only rap battled, but battled with their fair share of language drama, after a sponsorship was pulled due to failure to meet the required percentage of French lyrics. Not only are the Dead Obies on trend with their sound, but in their politics: how to preserve the French language while both remaining true artistically and accessible to a larger audience? Theymay not have pulled it off in the eyes of the subvention, they’ve won Montrealers over. Catch us singing out loud to their lyrics about the city we know and love. See you there! September 14, Metropolis.

5. MOOR MOTHER

pop montreal 2017
Philadelphia-based activist Camae Ayewa has been taking her message to art since 2012 with her Afrofuturist musical project Moor Mother. Her politically charged tracks cover social justice, race, and history by blending spoken word, rap, noise, and what she calls “blk girl blues”. She is beyond unapologetic, beyond “in your face”– she is a songstress with a purpose, deeply rooted in intergenerational trauma and crafted into a musical concoction we so need right now.  September 16th, 8:30pm. Bonus: As part of this year’s Pop Talks, Moor Mother will be in conversation with Yves Tumor on September 16 at noon.

4. TY SEGALL SOLO

popmontreal

Known for his prolific quality, the Californian will be dishing out his tunes solo at Fairmount Theatre: Salle Shure, September 14th at 9:30pm.  I once heard a 70 year old man say that Ty Segall saved rock ‘n roll. I’m not sure about that, but I do know that Segall’s mellow-af-but-still-screw-you garage sound is something I want to see live. Come catch this low-key version of Ty and soak up his songwriting genius.

3. SON LITTLE

Son Little takes us on a journey from the soul to the sensual with American rhythm blues like we haven’t heard in a while. There’s that gritty honey sound to his jams, transporting us to a warmer America than we’ve known lately. Instead of trying to recapture old soul and giving us another go at retro, Son Little takes in that old sound and spits out a 2017 piece–a nu-soul experience– true to its roots but true to today, too. For all these reasons and more, this live performance is one you won’t want to miss. September 14th, 10pm at Petit Campus: Salle Moog Audio.

2. JOHN MAUS

Beloved weirdo John Maus is gracing us with his lo-fi self on September 15th at the Rialto. Known for his synth wizardry, rare accessible experimentalism, and pop-esque creepy melodies, Maus contributes to the Nostalgia theme at POP’s #SWEET16 by coming at us with a show on the eve of his first album in 6 years. Sure to deliver some surprising treats, definitely a low-key comeback you won’t want to miss.

1. HURRAY FOR THE RIFF RAFF

popmontreal

“I’m not sure, but I’m almost positive, that all music came from New Orleans.” — Ernie K. Doe.

Whether you agree with Ernie or not, give these ladies one listen and you’ll end up down on your pretty knees thanking New Orleans for its very own Riff Raff. The Americana bluesy folk band pumps us up with powerful female vocals and a sound that’s so full of spunk and spirit it’s no wonder they’ve taken root in mystical NOLA, after their tough NYC days (see their killer track Living In The City for deets). If you’re one for women owning the stage, which of course you are, come see the action go down on September 17th, 11:30pm, at Piccolo Little Burgundy.
