14. Discover Montreal’s history at the Pointe a Callière museum

The Marché Jean-Talon is one of the oldest and largest public markets in North America. Accessible in both summer and winter months you can find colourful fruits, vegetables, cheeses, oils spices, flowers, baked goods, and more local artisanal products. 9. Hike to the top of Mount Royal

The mountain and it’s 30 foot tree topper of a cross look good from the ground, but the view is even better at the top. Head to the lookout and Chalet du Mont Royal for a stunning photo op, or over to Lac aux Castors to grab a snack at the pavilion and have a picnic by the water. You can get to the top by walking up gently sloping gravel paths, bike, bus, car or, literally, by going off the beaten path onto less travelled trails for a full experience of nature in the heart of the city. 7. Have a religious experience at Saint-Joseph’s oratory

The history behind the magnificent Saint-Joseph’s Oratory is one that draws 2 million visitors each year. Saint Brother André’s love of Saint Joseph inspired him to build the basilica in his honour. Brother André’s healing powers drew many pilgrims to the basilica, and the cured left their canes and wheelchairs there. You can now see the thousands of canes and wheelchairs at the oratory and light a candle in the basilica for a loved one.

One of few places serving Korean offerings in Le Plateau Mont-Royal, Luna strives towards authenticity with a modern twist. All of the food is homemade using traditional methods inspired by the families and ancestors of the restaurants’ owners. On the other hand, the plating and interior design will please even the most well-trained contemporary eye. This attention to detail makes the restaurant warm, inviting and, most importantly, delicious – altogether landing it a spot among the best Korean restaurants in the city, and as the best BYOW place, too. Luna is seriously so good you could just stop reading right here… but what’s the fun in that?

2. La Prunelle

This cute little Plateau area french bistro is well known for its delicate fine dining and quaint location. Situated right on the corner of Duluth and Drolet, La Prunelle is the perfect fit for a summer night out. The two main walls of the restaurant are floor to ceiling glass window panes. In the summer months the walls roll up like garage doors and the restaurant turns into a semi-terrace. It’s a good idea to call ahead for a reservation because this place is always packed. Also a great idea to come armed with cash, they don’t accept debit!

3. Gracia Afrika

This is one of the tastiest restaurants in the St-Henri area. Chef and owner of Gracia Afrika, Bibi Ntumba, grew up in the Congo and and was taught to cook traditional African dishes by her mother. Bibi now shares all the recipes she keeps close to her heart with her clients. You can expect delicious homemade fares in a warm and bright environment. Choose from fragrant, colourful traditional dishes like the mwambé (seasoned chicken in a peanut butter sauce) or an assortment of meats cooked in a banana leaf. Ideal for a relaxed evening (Bibi personally cooks most of the dishes so wait times are occasionally longer than usual), bring a bottle, sit back, and unwind!

4. Le P’tit Plateau

And now for something completely different… another small Parisian bistro! The Plateau area’s Le P’tit Plateau is traditional french dining done right. The atmosphere is humble almost as if to announce “We let our food define us not our decor.” P’tit is open Tuesday to Friday and offers two seatings for dinner (6:30 and 8:30 pm). Reservations are essential, this tiny place is popular and fills up quickly. Yes, yes it’s a bit pricey… However, its easier to rationalize eating here by bringing that cheaper bottle of red!

5. Pho Viet

If you’re looking for the best pho in town, then look no further than the gay village’s Pho Viet. This family restaurant was opened around 10 years ago by the charming owners, Mai and Lan. The dishes are traditional vietnamese made with grilled chicken, shrimp, and beef, but there are also some vegetarian options. The food is simple but the sauces are bursting with flavour. Try the Vietnamese fondue for two that comes with chicken, tomato shrimp, and vegetables in a spiced broth. The prices are very decent, and with your own wine, you’re in for a tasty and inexpensive night!

**Temporarily closed** This Plateau restaurant is a great fit for many dining occasions. Whether it’s a first date or a business lunch, Le Quartier General has got you gastronomically covered. Chef Patrick Plouffe describes his food as “Contemporary Quebecois” and also “Food of the World.” Pushing aside the flowery language, this place is simply tasty. Explore the Underground City of Montreal

In french we call it le RÉSO (réseau) or La Ville Souterraine, which translates to “the network” and “the Montreal underground city.” First built during the 1960’s, it now connects shoppers to over 1,000 retailers and restaurants through a network of tunnels, corridors and plazas. This city beneath the city, is most advantageous during those long winter months, making for convenient shopping and commuting without the slush and oversized coat. Needless to say, this alternative route can seem a bit daunting at first, and I’m not going to lie to you, it is pretty confusing if you don’t know your way around. Located in the Place Montreal Trust area of the tunnel, Jeff de Bruges is your one stop shop for sheer indulgence. This French brand makes decadent Belgian chocolate with only the best ingredients. This state of the art concert house seats 2100 and can seat an orchestra of 200. It was designed for unamplified music; the acoustics in the room are something to experience. It also houses the only functioning octobass in the world and an impressive organ that has 6,489 pipes! The Montreal Symphony Orchestra, conducted by grammy winner Kent Nagano, has 92 permanent members and puts on close to 100 shows a year. Taverne F is a tapas restaurant that serves traditional Portuguese dishes that are mostly meat and fish-based. Their glass walls allow patrons to enjoy the bustle of the Places des Arts square.

Right down the square is Brasserie T, a high end contemporary French restaurant in a sleek, bright, and glass building. The menu includes charcuterie, cheese, tartars, and various fish and meats. It’s a great stop before or after a show and they’re also open for brunch if you’re catching a matinee performance.

9. Fuel-up at The Tunnel Espresso Bar

Coffee fanatics know how to locate this place by heart, but for those who want to find it without getting lost in the burrows of city, look for the blue neon sign. This trendy espresso bar is literally a hole in the wall, and located in the tunnel between Eaten Center and Ville-Marie. The coffee here is unbelievably rich and flavourful, plus it comes with super friendly service. Make sure to fuel up here!

8. Go to the contemporary art Festival Art Souterrain

Each year this non-profit organization showcases international art institutions, artists, and the architectural and cultural heritage of downtown Montreal’s underground city. This unique festival aims at taking art and artist out of their traditional exhibition spaces. The 2017 theme is Art and Diversion and runs from March 4- 26. Last year, artists spanned through 7 km of the underground city Montreal!

6. Partake in the festival: Montréal en Lumière

Performing arts, gastronomy, free outdoor family activities, and a full night of exquisitely original discoveries await you at the festival Montréal en Lumière. As one of the largest winter festivals in the world, fans experience the joy of Montreal during wintertime! Each year the festival closes on the wildest night of the year called La Nuit Blanche! 5. Visit the gorgeous metro station: Station Champs-de-Mars

Champs-de-Mars metro station was designed by Adalbert Niklewicz back in 1966, and displays glasswork by Marcelle Ferron, who was one of the signatories of the manifesto Refus global, written in 1948 by painter Paul-Émile Borduas. Drogheria Fine opened their doors to the Mile End community approximately five years ago. Since then folks have travelled from near and far to grab a jar of its famed pasta sauce. This special sauce is the only product that Drogheria Fine actively promotes. Yet, they have shown that what they lack in variety, they make up for in quality! The specialty store has under ten products and all of them are based off the prized pasta sauce. Which is titled “La Salsa Della Nonna.” This quite literally translates to “Grandmas Sauce” and is owner Franco Grattuso’s family recipe.

When walking into the tiny shop visitors are instantly greeted with a tantalizing aroma and some tomato eye candy. Customers are able to see the sauce being prepared in the back room, pots’n’all! The small shop can give off a minimalist appearance with only a few jars on the shelves. However, this is due to customers buying the sauce faster than they can stock it, rather than an offbeat design choice.

After meeting Franco it quickly becomes clear that he is the godfather of Montreal pasta sauce. He explained to us “With Drogheria I’m continuing the history of my culture and of the history of Montreal culture.” Franco used to disperse his famed sauce from his own restaurant “Il Piatto della Nonna.” However he departed from the busy restaurant industry and chose to focus on dispersing his sauce at a retail level. Thus, Drogheria Fine was born!

The shop is located directly next door to the world famous Fairmont bagel. Franco told us that he likes having Fairmont as a neighbours because “the light’s always on and they have great clientele.” Who would have thought such a partnership could exist between bagels and tomato sauce?

So if you find yourself in the neighbourhood be sure to pop into Drogheria Fine. Have a chat with Franco, enjoy the traditional ambience, and pick up some of his exceptional pasta sauce. You’d better go before it’s sold out!

Le Salon Cardinal opened at the beginning of December last year. Since then it has steadily grown a following from purely hipster word of mouth. Kelsey the manager at Le Salon Cardinal told us “We’ve been slammed almost every weekend since we opened, it’s been incredible!” This hot new addition to the St.Laurent strip could not have come at a better time. The Mile End is overloaded with coffee shops and frankly I’m getting bored.

This delicate tea house is a refreshing addition to a coffee soaked neighborhood. The two level tea salon is located directly on top of the local favorite “The Sparrow.” Le Salon Cardinal was opened by the same owners of The Sparrow in a space that used to be a “bumpin” night club. They have completely revamped the place and it now resembles a victorian dreamscape. Hanging chandeliers, antique bookcases and elegant china prove that creating a palpable atmosphere is all in the details.

The interior alone was so impressive that we almost forgot our main reason for visiting… the tea! I don’t pretend to be a professional tea expert but I like to think I can appreciate the difference between a traditional china green and Lipton’s. We tried two of their teas and would recommend both. The first was the Panda Green and the other was an Oolong called tich-nah-something? Both tea’s arrived at the table steeped to perfection, not too weak yet not too strong. The Panda Green was impressive because it held all the lovely aromas of green tea but without the bitter after-bite. The Oolong’s name wasn’t memorable however the tea itself was excellent! It was a perfect balance of bold black tea with fragrant floral undertones. Be sure to get a pot of both for your table!

Le Salon Cardinal also offers a variety of tea time treats. We tried the blueberry scone with jam and clotted cream, as well as the Egg and Watercress sandwich. Both the scone and the sandwich were high quality and very satisfying. The best way to describe the food is “traditional.” They didn’t go out on a limb and try to revolutionize tea time. Good call, some things are better left untouched!

If you’ve got a lazy afternoon to kill, why not spend it in style at Le Salon Cardinal?
