Things to do in Little Italy Montreal

Welcome to Little Italy Montreal, where pizza is in the air, and the sights are sure to charm. This quaint neighbourhood is an increasingly popular spot for new homeowners, date-goers, and out-of-towners. The culprits? Jean-Talon market, cute parks, and the district’s stunning architecture are sure to blame. But Little Italy is much more than great food and nice buildings: it’s a district rich in culture and history, equipped with its own colourful, vibrant energy.

But before we delve into its many delights… Little Italy is located between St-Denis and St-Laurent, and spans from Jean-Talon to St-Zotique. If you enter via St-Laurent, you’ll go through its unmissable Little Italy archway.

Grab a slice

littel-italy-montreal-pizza-napoletanna

Okay, okay… We get it: you came here for the pizza.

A good place to start is Pizzeria Napoletana. Napoletana opened many moons ago in 1948, and claims to be the first pizzeria in Montreal. It evolved from a casual spot where immigrant workers would come to play pool and cards, to being one of the most popular eateries in Little Italy. Simplicity and authenticity make their pizzas a memorable affair. Oh and, it’s BYOW, so…get on it.

189 Dante Street

Next up, Elio Pizzeria! Elio is known for its amazing tomato sauce, thin crust pies, and outstanding service. Come here after a long day of Little Italy activities and let yourself relax with a nice scrumptious slice. This popular neighbourhood joint will make you feel like a local and let you blend in for a sample of authentic Little Italy living.

Jean-Talon Market

little-italy-montreal-jean-talon-marketlittle-italy-montreal-jean-talon-veglittle-italy-montreal-jean-talon-market-eats

Jean-Talon market is affectionately thought of as Little Italy’s main artery. Bustling through the market are locals, visitors, chefs, families, friends, lovers… It’s a hub of hungry, happy activity. Come join them for an afternoon at the market and sample different cheeses, meats, maybe even some freshly squeezed juice! Discover artisanal goodies, locally-grown produce, and of course, the world’s best maple syrup. We like Fromagerie Hamel for its exquisite cheeses, Délices de la Mer for its high quality seafood, and la Crêperie du Marché for some sinful crêpes.

7070 Henri-Julien Avenue

Savour some local craft beer

litte-italy-montreal-vice-versa

Right on the outskirts of Little Italy, you’ll find Montreal’s top craft beer destination, Rosemont. The district is home to many micro breweries, making it an excellent way to discover Montreal’s craft beer scene.

Birra: Steps away from Jean-Talon market, Birra is perfectly situated for some relaxation at the end of a charged touring day. Birra uses a local brewing coop, MABRASSERIE, to brew their beer. That means that the beer here is part of a bigger movement, the neighbourhood’s need and love of good brews! Come be part of the buzz.

Notable Restaurants

little-italy-montreal-impasto
little-italy-montreal-cul-sec

A more upscale restaurant that’s well worth the extra buck is Impasto.  A project lead by celebrity chef Stefano Faita, the restaurant is known for its fresh pasta, authentic flavours, and high quality ingredients. The menu is seasonal, but you can bet that their dishes like the crab fettuccini or octopus will satisfy that Italy culinary trip yearning, albeit temporarily. Come here if you’re looking to be impressed and/or impress another. Reservations are a must. 48 Dante, impastomtl.ca

Bottega Pizzeria is a great pick if you’re looking for a lively, laid-back evening, but still have a three course dinner at a fair price. Pizza, meat balls, lamb, pasta… Their menu holds many gems, and Montreal’s known it since they opened, making it forever popular. Reservations recommended. 65 St-Zotique E. bottega.ca

Dinette Triple Crown: Have you heard the saying, “if it seems too good to be true, it probably is”? Triple Crown takes that saying and squashes it fast. American style BBQ chicken with all the fixings, mac ‘n cheese, and most importantly… picnic baskets you can bring to the park across the street!!!!! Yes, yes, yes. Take advantage of this picnic facilitation for your next romantic soirée. Sinful food and romance have never gone so perfectly together. 6704 Clark, dinettetriplecrown.com

Cul-sec is a wine bar with a private import selection (including organic and natural wines). If you’re looking to treat yourself with some elegant organic dishes and rare wine finds, Cul de Sac is your spot. 29 Beaubien Est; culsec.ca

For a decadent and hip snack bar, make your way to Chez Tousignant. A retro look, high quality ingredients and inventive takes on snack bar classics (think poutine cheeseburger) make Chez Tousignant a popular lunch and dinner spot. Put on your new floral print dress shirt and walk on over. 6956 Drolet; cheztousignant.com

Just a few steps from the Jean Talon Market, Kitchen Gallerie is the product of the beautiful produce sold at the market. They’re constantly changing the menu based on the chef’s current inspiration and the season. The restaurant just had to expand because of its popularity. If you’re in Little Italy, craving some French bistro fares, then Kitchen Gallerie is the choice for you! 60 Jean Talon St E, www.kitchengalerie.com/

Sample a new neighbourhood: The Mile Ex

mile-ex-montreal

A newly residential neighbourhood is hard to come by in a city like Montreal, but when industrial buildings turn into condos, that’s what you get. You also get trendy cafés, biergartens, and trendy restaurants. Mile Ex is exactly this, and being adjacent to Little Italy (and often considered part of it), you’ll want take a stroll through. Restaurant Manitoba, Café Dispatch, and Alexandraplatz bar are a few must-sees. Check out our guide on the hood for tips and pointers here.

Plaza St-Hubert

plaza-st-huber

The plaza marks itself by a metal and glass awning, covering all of its 300+ merchants. A bit of an eyesore, you won’t make your way here for the sight seeing. It seems a bit mysterious at first: why would they make this street look so… stale? But it’s part of a longer story: St-Hubert was the subject of many project proposals seeking to protect its mom and pop merchants while attracting new business and shoppers. The first was the biggest shopping center in the world, the second a pedestrian mall, and the third… its now infamous sidewalk covering! The result is a winter-friendly spot to shop, an association of vendors that stick together and serve their community. Visiting the plaza is well worth it if you want to get a glimpse into a local’s shopping spot, or if you want to witness first-hand a strange piece of Montreal’s development history. maplaza.ca/en/

St-Hubert Plaza is located on St-Hubert Street between Bellechasse and Jean-Talon

Check out Madonna Della Difesa church

little-italy-montreal-eglise-dante
little-italy-montreal-la-iglesia-de-nuestra-senora-de-la-defensa

Madonna Della Difesa church, also known as Notre Dame de la Défense, is an architectural sweet spot. It was built by Italian immigrants in 1919 to commemorate the miracle of Madonna’s apparition in Molise. It marks its claim to fame with by combining both breathtakingly beautiful and controversial elements. On the side of beauty, architect R. Montbirant painted the church’s remarkable frescoes based on tartist Guido Nincheri’s drawings. For the controversial part? Inside you will find a painting of Mussolini. Without commenting on the latter, the church is an authentic representation of the era it was built in, and is well worth a visit.

Take a coffee break

Little Italy Montreal

Montreal’s Little Italy marks itself apart from the rest of the city in terms of coffee shops. Not only by way of its particularly deliciously strong coffee, but Little Italy swaps its most of its cafes carry an authentic, mom and pop quality to them.

Caffe Italia: Authentic vibes are at their highest here, with a 50/60’s decor and Italian men at the bar sipping espresso. 6840 Boul St-Laurent, (514) 495-0059

Caffè San Simeon: Coffee nerds, addicts, enthusiasts, and allies congregate at San Simeon for arguably the best cafe freddo in town. Seriously. People go nuts for the insanely strong San Simeon coffee. Their classic (and adorable!) selection of desserts are a quick sell, too. Summer months get the added bonus of a front deck, a feature that takes latte-sipping from a 5 to a 10, easily. 39 Dante, Instagram

Café Oui Mais Non: This sassily named spot embraces vintage goods in its boutique, caffeine on its espresso machine, and even food and beer in between! Café Oui Mais Non translates to Coffee Yes But No, a feeling we can all relate to, let’s be honest. Make your way here for a cute ambiance in which to sip a mean espresso or smooth latte. 72 Rue Jarry E, cafeouimaisnon.com

Parks Galore

littel-italy-montreal-parc-dante
little-italy-montreal-parc-dante

Located right around the corner from Little Italy, Jarry Park is nothing to scoff at. One of the city’s biggest parks, it comes equipped with paths,  a pond, ducks (!!), a fountain, fields, a pool… ah the good life. Google Maps Link

Little Italy Park is much smaller, but size isn’t everything, right? This is the kind of park that takes up a whole block and acts as an oasis for cute dates and breaths of fresh air. It’s got a gazebo, picnic tables, and a few benches for that optimal sun soaking. What makes it extra special however, is its relation to Dinette Triple Crown. Located across the street, the decadent American style eatery provides cute picnic baskets with their meals so that you can eat in the parc. Yes, it’s a magical thing. Google Maps Link

Dante Park is another quaint spot, right across from the famous Madona Della Difesa church. Benches invite you for a bask in the sun. A bocce ball area invites you for some good ol’ bocce. Rest here and discuss your experience at Madona Della Difesa after you visit the architectural wonder. Google Maps link

Shop ’till you drop

Betina Lou:

This Montreal-based clothing store is where you’ll find timeless wardrobe staples that are both classic and modern in their design. The pieces are inspired by uniforms and men’s clothing but made to fit and flatter the female form. Think neutral colours and delicate patterns that can pair nicely with the items you already own. If you’re looking to boost your wardrobe with some classy pieces, head to 6510 Henri Julien Ave.

Bélanger Martin

If you’re passionate about interior design, Bélanger Martin is your candy store. In the heart of Little Italy is a general store that has just about every cute and contemporary item you need for a beautifully decorated house. The owners carefully select every item from lamps, vases, artwork, and even a pair of ultra-comfortable slippers. This is a great pre-dinner stop to buy that plush pillow to complete the living room. 6906 St Laurent Blvd

Bakeries

little-italy-montreal-beigne

Trou de Beigne: Did you hear the news? Doting a cute fancy doughnut in your hand as you walk down the street is the new way to affirm your fashion status. Out with the Michael Kors purses, in with the bacon maple goodies! Seriously though, Trou de Beigne (French for doughnut hole) is a doughy paradise of mouth watering concoctions like Nutella Banana and yep, Maple Bacon. Made fresh daily, you gotta try ’em. Artistan baked goods at their best. 156 Saint-Zotique East; troudebeigne.com

Alati-Casserta: One of the things about Little Italy that makes it so charming is its blend of old and new, trendy and traditional. Alati-Casserta keeps things old school, just to keep us in check. It’s one of the oldest kids on the block, and fills cannolis to order. Mm hmm. Freshly filled sweet ricotta goodness, and crisp exteriors, made on the spot. They’ve got tons of other creations too, and are a must-have while you’re in the area. 227 Dante; alaticaserta.com

La Cornetteria: Do you remember the cronut craze? La Cornetteria took part in the wave by creating Montreal’s first cronut, attracting Montrealers from all over to try the yummy things. They’ve kept them ever since, and have a wide variety of flavours. Come sample ’em for yourself, and sip an espresso while you’re there. 6528 St-Laurent; lacornetteria.com

Pro tip: Try one cannoli at each bakery. Compare and contrast. Repeat.

My favourite thing about Montreal is the cities’ distinct charm. Montreal’s charm lurks in the corners of eclectic bars and at the bottom of a Mile End coffee cup. It creeps up on me in the back of cabs and sits on every apartment’s staircase in the Plateau. The cities’ popular tourist destinations are not always reflexive of the delicate charm that Montreal holds. With that being said, some tourist destinations are worth your precious time. A few Montreal landmarks express exciting and thrilling stories about the history of Montreal. These landmarks tell stories that a chic cafe cannot. Sometimes the most difficult part of being a tourist is deciding where and what you want to spend your time visiting. So we’ve put together a list of the top 10 tourist destinations in Montreal. Check out a few that interest you and don’t forget to get lost in the fuzzier corners of this charming city.

1. Montreal Botanical Gardens

Biological things to see in Montreal

The Botanical Gardens of Montreal are a beautiful and exquisite destination. Montreal’s Botanical Gardens are considered to be one of the most important in the world, due to the extent of their collections and facilities. The garden’s were started in 1935 when Brother Marie-Victorin pleaded to Mayor Camilien Houde for the creation of the Botanical Gardens. The mayor was a former student of Brother Marie Vicotrin and became the focus of a public plea.  Brother Marie-Victorin’s plea went like this:

“We will soon be celebrating Montréal’s three hundredth anniversary. You need to give a gift, a royal gift, to the City, our city. But Montréal is Ville-Marie, a woman… And you certainly can’t give her a storm sewer or a police station… It’s obvious what you must do! Give her a corsage for her lapel. Fill her arms to overflowing with all the roses and lilies of the field!”

Thus, the Mayor allowed for the creation of The Botanical Gardens. Brother Marie-Victorin kept his focus on teaching and ensured that the garden stayed tied to values of educational and science. Today, the gardens are an extravagant attraction year round!  The Botanical Gardens encompass everything that a visitor is looking for on a visit to Montreal. The Botanical Gardens tell interesting stories about Montreal’s past and also simultaneously provide a breathtaking and calming refuge from the city.

2. The Churches of Montreal

Spiritual things to see in Montreal

Mark Twain said that when visiting Montreal it was “The first time I was ever in a city where you couldn’t throw a brick without breaking a church window.” Mark Twain was not exaggerating, every Montreal community has multiple churches ranging in beliefs and faith. Every religious house and community has their own unique story to tell, although, some are more wildly discussed then others. Notably, the Notre Dame Basilica located in Old Montreal. The basilica has beautiful and dramatic architecture that has become world famous. The stained glass windows that line the sides of Notre Dame do not display biblical scenes. Rather, the stained glass windows depict the religious history of Montreal. We also recommend Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel in Old Montreal. The chapel is one of the oldest churches in Montreal. It is the site where St. Marguerite Bourgeoys (one of the patron saints of Montreal) built her congregation. This chapel also became a pilgrimage site for 19th century sailors journeying through the Old Port of Montreal. Lastly, we can’t forget St. Josephs Oratory. This stunning basilica situated upon Mont Royal holds rich history about Montreal’s religious past, and a beautiful view. Visiting one of the many churches of Montreal is a great way to understand the larger history that the city originates from. The churches are a large part of the cities engrained culture. No matter what your religious beliefs might be, they are an excellent addition to your travel itinerary!

3. Mont Royal Moutain

Panoramic things to See in Montreal

Parc Mont Royal is a natural oasis located directly in the middle of the bustling city. Climbing the mountain is an exciting and healthy way to get a bird’s eye view of the city. There are a few different lookout stations on the mountain that boast the greatest views of the cityscape. Mont Royal park is a fantastic destination at any time of the year. In the wintertime folks can skate on Beaver Pond or even snowshoe up the mountain if they’re feeling adventurous. During the summer months the Tam Tam’s  festival is held weekly on Mont Royal. If you’re lucky enough to be in Montreal on a Sunday we highly suggest you check it out! Upon the main lookout onlookers can find brass plaques describing Jacque Cartier’s ascent to the top. Cartier was the very first european man to scale the hill (or mountain depending who you are talking too!)  The real glory of Mont Royal is its ability to make you feel like you have left the city far behind. Exploring the mountain is a great stress-free and fun activity for the healthy tourist!

4. Visit the Mile End district

Local montreal tours

Contemporary things to see in Montreal

The Mile End is a great destination for tourists because it encompasses many of the attributes that make Montreal a unique city. The Mile End district is historic, artistic, and trendy, all at the same time. The small european neighbourhood is home to many locally owned shops, cafes and restaurants. When exploring the Mile End you are sure to come across eclectic music venues, excellent coffee, and the two famous Bagel giants. Both Fairmont and St. Viateur are in competition for Montreal’s Top Bagel. Be sure to taste both bagels, so you can weigh in on the “Bagel War.” If you’re not interested in Bagel’s but a still a foodie like us, you’ll enjoy our “Mile End Food tour.” Our tour showcases the best Mile End food spots and their significance to the Mile End District. We’re so excited about the Mile End here at Local Montreal that we even wrote an article about it! Here we break down the best activities, shops and restaurants to visit in the Mile End. Give it a read and let us know if we left anything out!

5.  Explore the cobblestone streets of Old Montreal

Montreal Old Port food walking tour

Legacies and monumental things to see in Montreal

The old city is a tasty visual treat for anyone visiting Montreal. When I walk through Old Montreal, I just can’t shake that feeling that this district was airlifted from Europe overnight. City officials have worked very hard to ensure that the area has maintained its exquisite victorian architecture and design. The cobblestone streets and old time charm have attracted tourists from around the world. Most of which are eager to see Canada’s very own european village. Great places to check out are the Centre Phi and the DHC. If you are interested in the historical foundations and monuments within the Old town we offer free tours almost every day. Also notable is the walking street “Rue St. Paul.”  St. Paul is lined with tourist shops and specialty stores. The street is a bit kitschy but really what did you expect? Most of Old Montreal is geared towards tourists so it’s best to go with an open mind and an open wallet. Just do yourself a favour and don’t take one of those horse and carriage rides… Your money is better spent on a heavenly sandwich at Olive et Gourmando!

Le Boulevard de St. Laurent is a major artery of Montreal. The street bisects multiple neighbourhoods and destinations. A fun and fulfilling way to spend a day in Montreal is walking along St.Laurent. I’d suggest starting at the very bottom in Old Montreal and slowly working your way up to Little Italy. Take your time and appreciate how every few blocks Montreal changes dramatically. You’ll pass through the Old Montreal, China Town, Quartier des spectacles, Le Plateau du Mont Royal, The Mile End and Little Italy. Every neighbourhood has something different to add to the experience. When walking up St.Lo (short hand for St.Laurent) the possibilities are endless and the excitement consistent. This DIY walking tour is a simple and exciting way to experience the many faces of Montreal.

7. Watch a Montreal Canadiens Hockey Game

montrealt things to do hockey

Energizing things to see in Montreal

If there is one thing that Montreal does well, it’s the good ol’ hockey game. The Bell Centre is home to “The Montreal Canadiens.” Montreal Canadien games almost always sell out and I’m not surprised. No matter which season or which line up I see the experience is the same… fantastic.  Watching the Habs play is always thrilling and entertaining!  Half the fun is watching the Montreal fans go buck wild. They are arguably some of the wildest fans in the NHL (I dare you to prove me wrong.) Tickets are best bought well in advance. However, if you’re down to the wire scalpers are always available. Be careful, Montreal scalpers tend to sell their tickets at an amazingly high mark up. Going to see the Montreal Canadiens play is never a bad idea, just don’t forget to cheer for the red team!

8. Enjoy Le Quartier des spectacles

Creative things to see in Montreal

Quartier des spectacles is a small area in downtown Montreal completely devoted to the arts. QDS is surrounded by various art and performance houses. Some notable mentions are; The Museum of Contemporary Art,The Society of Art and Technology and The Montreal Symphony house. The actual expanse has a total area of one square kilometre. The open space in the centre of the square has become a lively centre for Montreal’s cultural events and festivals. During the summer months QDS hosts; The Just for Laughs Festival, Francofolies and The International Jazz Festival. In the winter you can look forward to “Montreal en Lumiere!” QDS is not limited to just these events and festivals. The square always has various art exhibitions and concerts year round. The square is also surrounded by many accomplished restaurants. We recommend the Biiru a new Japanese eatery adjacent to QDS.  The ever changing nature of the public exhibitions can make visits to QDS a happy an entertaining surprise. You never know what you’re gonna find… So go with an open mind!

9. Montreal’s Waterfront

Waterside things to see in Montreal

The Montreal waterfront has many excellent activities for tourists to consider. First, there is the Old Port located within the old city of Montreal. The Old Port is home to Igloofest, the Science and Technology Center, a large open-air ice rink, and an IMAX cinema. The old port also has many buildings and monuments that date back to a time when the port was a buzzing economic centre of North America. Whilst exploring the waterfront you may come across the Lachine Canal. The canal dates back to 1825 and was named a National Historic Site of Canada in 1996. Check out the lock system and feel free to ask any Parks Canada employee “How do the locks work?” You can recognize a parkie by their forest green uniform. For lunch there is always the nearby Atwater Market for some local food and fare. Or if you’re visiting during the summer you can try an innovative new snack bar named MuvBox. Not enough waterfront activities? Check out Silo #5! Silo #5 is an abandoned grain elevator in the Old port. It is being used for the “Silophone” project where visitors make use of the Silo’s incredible acoustics. You can participate in the Silophone project by calling into the Silo or by visiting the sonic observatory. Confused yet? Read more about it here!

10.  Saint Helen’s Island (Île Sainte-Hélène)

Celebratory, Historical and Artistic things to see in Montreal

Saint Helen’s Island is located southwest of Montreal. The island exists in it’s present form due to the work done prior to expo 67, the worlds fair. In the early 1960s the island was expanded using earth and rocks dug up during excavations for the metro system. Expo 67 didn’t only have a geological impact on Montreal it also had an amazing social and cultural impact! The entire world came to visit Montreal for the exposition. Consequently, the event dramatically changed the lives of many Montrealers. Now the remaining sites can be visited on Saint Helen’s Island. Such as the Biosphere and many other pavilions which were built exclusively for expo 67. The island is home to also home to Parc Jean Drapeau.  Jean Drapeau holds many events and festivals such as Osheaga and Piknik Electronique (Piknik’s Summer Calendar will be up May,19,14.)  If that’s not enough Saint Helen’s Island also has the F1 Formula race track! Saint Helen’s Island is a destination where you can easily fill an entire day with fun and exciting activities. Enjoy!

6. Stroll up Boulevard St.Laurent
