One of the best places for tourists to visit is Saint Helen’s Island. The island is home to great festivals like Osheaga at Jean Drapeau park, LaRonde, Montreal’s Biosphere and Piknic Electronik. Under Alexander Calder’s statue, L’Homme, tourists and locals flock to dance to the electronic beats of local and international DJs. Let’s be honest, Piknic is the perfect excuse to drink in the middle of a nice summer day. Shake your booty on the dance floor at the main stage or sunbathe by the river accompanied by a signature Piknic bucket of alcohol. For more information, click here.

Ma Bicyclette is a bike rental service right on the Canal. The folk here do repairs, sell snacks, and are some of the friendliest staff around. It’s a great option for tourists to get the Lachine Canal experience without having their own bike, but it’s also a favourite with locals because of the good vibes, location, and the commitment-free aspect of riding around this neck of the woods. Extra perks that totally beat renting a bixi: guided bike tours, and all rentals include a helmet, lock, saddle bag and map.

It’s just sprouting with fun new experiences… Firstly, Depanneur le Pick Up doubles as a restaurant and a modern but cozy fine food experience awaits at Le Mile Ex Restaurant (which the area is named after). In addition, there’s always fun at backyard-party style ‘biergarten’ Alexandraplatz, and something for third wave coffee fanatics at Dispatch Coffee. Full of artists that were priced out of mile end, even the streets are something to behold, and the area is speckled with hidden treasures behind garage doors. A List of the Best Coffee in Montreal

My favorite coffee spot? You’ve probably never heard of it. This list of best coffee in Montreal is in no particular order, because it was too hard to deduce a fair sequence without being shunned by the Coffee Gods.

14. Café Brooklyn

71 Rue Saint Viateur Est

375400_220318024769704_853802558_n

Fresh food, good coffee, reasonable prices and a friendly ambiance. This cafe started off as a 20th century modern furniture store, but rapidly morphed into a coffee shop. While you’re there, try the coffee cake (it is baked by the owner’s aunt every day)!

13. Le Cagibi

5490 Boulevard Saint-Laurent

best coffee in montreal

This place is as cool as it gets: a vegetarian coffee shop that doubles as a concert venue. Not only can you savour excellent coffee here, but you can watch the staff prep your burritos, admire the quirky decor, and experience an authentic Montreal apartment feel as you walk on the creaky floorboards. With mismatched chairs, tables, and dishes, the veritable bohemian atmosphere is sure to imbue you and your coffee during your stay. Oh and, they don’t charge extra for soy.

12. Cafe Myriade

1432 Rue Mackay
1000 Sainte Catherine Street West
4627 Saint-Denis Street

Best coffee in Montreal

This ever-popular coffee destination (that’s often the sustenance of Concordia students) is more than a pretty cafe. Myriade only works with quality-focused roasters–mainly from 49th Parallel Roasters in Vancouver, BC–but they also feature guest roasts from across North America and Europe. Their coffee tastes even better because it’s guilt-free: they pay the farmers above the standard Fair-Trade prices. With their seasonal menu, you’ll have a chance to taste a myriad of flavours at Myriade.

11. Club Social

180 St. Viateur Ouest Montreal

Club sociale Best Coffee Shops in Montreal Mile End

Continuing up the Mile-End’s St-Viateur, you’ll eventually encounter Olympico’s rival, Club Social. This coffee shop’s terrace makes for one of the best (but well known) summer hangout spots. Trees surround it, locals wave to each other, and (coffee) love is in the air. Ordering from here makes you feel like you’re instantly part of the neighbourhood thanks to the staff’s friendliness. Make sure you order a latte, they’re 2 bucks!

10. Pikolo Espresso Bar

3418b Park Ave

best coffee in montreal

Once Marie-Eve Laroche discovered Australia’s coffee culture, she decided to bring a taste of it back to Montreal. Pikolo Espresso Bar says it all in the name: it’s a small space that serves espresso-based drinks. Laroche works with Canadian roasters Phil & Sebastian and Microtorrefacteur Saint-Henri to accentuate the flavour of each unique coffee.

9. Café Résonance

5175 Avenue du Parc

best coffee in montreal

This vegan jazz-cafe is huge, very low key, and has a great ambiance! They often host reading and music events. And just in case coffee actually does keep you up at night, they’ll keep you company: open hours go until midnight every day of the week.

8. Dispatch

best coffee in montreal

Dispatch was started by Chrissy Durcak who began by serving the coffee out of a truck. Her philosophy was to spend time cultivating a relationship with the farmers they get their coffee from. Having now removed the training wheels, Dispatch serves up a tasty cup of coffee in three different locations around Montreal. The coffee shops’ ultra-minimalist decor doesn’t reflect their coffee–those beans are packed with flavour–because Dispatch is riding the third wave of coffee hard.

267 Rue Saint Zotique O
3480 University St
4021 St Laurent Blvd

7. Cafe Odessa

65 rue Beaubien East

Best coffee in motnreal

From the owners of Le Vieux Vélo popular brunch eatery in Rosemont comes Odessa, an industrial-style cafe with a nautical theme based the eponymous port city in the Ukraine. This third wave coffee shop gets their beans from Pilot Coffee Roasters who try and directly source every bean roasted. Baristas are particularly friendly here and easy to have a little chat with as you sip on your drink of choice.

6. Arts Café

201 Avenue Fairmount Ouest

10330263_639351526141530_6620909786802541228_n

The service here is amazing: you are always greeted with a smile! They have generous portions, quality coffee, rustic decor and oh- did I mention the great service?

5. Olympico

124 Rue St-Viateur Ouest

Olympico Best Coffee Shops in Montreal Mile End

They have legendary coffee; it’s fantastic and you will not be disappointed. It can get very crowded though- so maybe you shouldn’t come here… It’s not even that great. (To many people know about the goodness that this place can offer!!!)

4. Café Falco

5605 Avenue de Gaspé

Best coffee shops in Montreal

The layers of flavour to be found in Falco’s various coffees are gastronomical. The place has an industrial feeling to it but has a great ambiance and vibe. They offer a variety of food that have a Japanese twist to them. Come here for lunch!

3. Melinas Phyllo Bar

5733 du Parc

Best coffee in Montreal

Melina’s is a cute, little shop that serves delicious Greek coffee and Greek pastries. The staff here is super friendly and chatty which makes you want to come back.

2. Le Dépanneur Café

Le Dépanneur Café is charming and unique, and offers delicious healthy meals and specialty drinks. They play relaxing lounge music, but always invite local artists to sign up to play live music. (Beware this place can get awfully crowded).

1. MELK Bar à Café

1206 Stanley St
5612 Monkland Ave

Bar Le “Ritz” PDB:

The free drumming festival that pops up every Sunday at Jeanne-Mance park has become a bit of a Montreal cliche. It makes for a nice sunny day spent in the grass, but if you really want to see something new, check out the Medieval (foam) sword fighting going on in the forest just behind the pasture. Some of the role-players have been coming out for over a decade in full medieval dress. All you need to join in, though, is an open open mind and a foam sword. Can you come out victorious?

Everyone’s been talking about the growth of Mile-Ex, what could’ve been a casualty of urban sprawl, is now a creative hub. It’s just sprouting with fun new experiences… Depanneur le Pick Up doubles as a restaurant and a modern but cozy fine food experience awaits at Le Mile Ex Restaurant (which the area is named after). Darling:

This cafe/bar has been packed since its Spring 2017 opening. Maybe it’s the steampunk/industrial decor that’s got a Los Angeles vibe, maybe it’s all the craft beer and cider they’ve got on tap. Whatever the reason, it’s an exciting hangout at any hour of the day or night. facebook.com/BarCafeDarling

La Taverne du Pélican:

The team behind Old Montreal’s Le Club Chasse et Pêche has opened up a new low-key bar in Mile-End, though it might not be quite a dive, it’s trying to be. Sporting events and funny flicks being played nightly on their tv screens are sure to make you feel at home. instagram.com/latavernedupelican

Siboire:

This hugely popular Sherbrooke microbrewery has finally graced Montreal’s Saint-Laurent street! Beer amateurs and experts alike now have another drinkery to delight their craft beer-loving palate. siboire.ca

Montreal Attractions you Won’t Want to Miss

By Mia Pearson

So, you’ve arrived on the island of Montreal. You’ve taken the first step to having a great time! Montreal’s a city with so much to do that even the locals have a hard time keeping track. It’s a hub for great restaurants, bars, festivals and events that’ll keep any visitor gloriously entertained. We’ve put together a guide to help you navigate through the city’s best attractions. So without further ado, let’s jump into this exciting city!

A Party for Your Palate!

Let’s start with where to eat. Montreal’s got a thriving foodie scene with some of the best chefs and restaurants in Canada. Whatever you’re craving, Montreal’s got it. We’ve got authentic food from almost every country around the globe. Looking for Moroccan food? Montreal can hook you up with some tagine. Peckish for some foie gras? We can definitely make that happen; this city is filled to the brim with French bistros. So what food is Montreal known for? The simple answer is bagels, smoked meat, and, of course, poutine!

Bagels:
You might think that New York City is known for having the best bagels and smoked meat, but you’ll quickly eschew that notion once you’ve tried Montreal’s. The best bagels can be found in Montreal’s Mile End. There’s a rivalry between Saint-Viateur bagels on Saint-Viateur street, and Fairmount bagels on Fairmount street. Just a few blocks away from each other, these bagel shops both bake their bagels in a wood burning oven and use the same bagel-making technique that they’ve been using in Montreal since the early 20th century. So, go get yourself a warm bagel and definitely have a taste of both!

Smoked meat:
Schwartz’s. You may have already heard of Schwartz’s deli, but if you haven’t tried their smoked meat yet, you’re missing out on a heavenly, hearty experience. Even the Rolling Stones once requested that Schwartz’s be delivered to the venue they were playing at in Montreal. Be prepared to wait in line for a sandwich, but it’s all worth it for a bite of delicious meat that’s been cured for 12 days with that special blend of secret spices. Oh, and one more thing, Schwartz’s is partially owned by Céline Dion, to make it even more interesting.

Lester’s Deli (there is no line at Lester’s in beautiful Outremont neighbourhood)

Poutine:
Here’s a dish you won’t be able to get anywhere else! Other cities have tried to replicate poutine, but their attempts never come close to what you’ll find in Montreal. For those who don’t know, poutine has three main ingredients: gravy, cheese curds, and fries. We’ll begin with La Banquise; another place where you’ll wait in line, but their poutines are especially delicious. They’re also open 24/7, and a classic Montreal night spent partying should usually end at La Banquise at 4AM. Next, we’ve got Patati Patata, a tiny eatery with quality ingredients. Their poutines are always topped with an olive and lathered in their homemade gravy. Try the Patatine which adds roasted peppers, mushrooms, and onion to the dish. You can’t really go wrong with poutine around Montreal, but these two places take the cake!
